I avoided all spoilers/articles for this, and completed it as fast as I could. I knew there was some kind of controversy, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was whilst playing. In terms of Lev - anyone who has a problem with the story beats needs to pop their little narcissism bubble and realise that not everything is about their feelings. The 'dead-naming' thing made perfect sense, and even if it wasn't used for the villains, people in real life trip up on names. I'm a teacher and I have done this - it's extremely awkward, but has never caused offence, because people in real life aren't as easily offended as the most vocal and whiny people you generally hear on the internet. If seeing racism, homophobia, sexual abuse and literal murder in entertainment is acceptable, then so is this. Abby's body shocked me too - I literally went "Fucking hell!" when I saw her. And good - effective narratives elicit a response and that did. Just from her character design, I could instantly understand her state of mind. It went against the grain in a good way. This game was ace. It pulled a Walter White with Ellie to make us question the protagonist's choices - it did the same with Joel in the first entry, so why not here? Disliking what the main character is doing is not automatically a bad thing. |
