I use Gandi for domains and they also allow payment by PayPal if that’s of any use to the friend.

I would say as long as the domain is registered under the name of the person using the domain it doesn’t really matter whose name is on the payment method. Might be worth also making sure that the card details aren’t remembered and it’s not set to automatically renew.
