Finished the adventure mode now. Works great as an introduction to the various game modes and drip feeds new techniques, shot types and clubs, essentially a long tutorial. There is only one time you have to do the XC Golf (IIRC each game mode only happens once), and I did mess it up completely the first attempt not realising what was going on, but yes - the tornados lift both you and the ball so really it's just about playing shorter shots at times to line up well with a tornado when needed. On my second attempt I passed with plenty of shots to spare. In a later section that you learn how to do lob shots (and super lobs) which would have made XC far easier, but I guess that's the point, to introduce you to the tornados. I agree that the camera controls at times seem a step back, especially when trying to work out if the trajectory is high enough to get over objects. But if there is a tree in the way, it's either use an iron or aim to the side and apply a lot of curve - a wood is not going to get over it. I think the curve will be something that needs mastering and I like the mechanic of applying it at (up to) 4 stages of the shot. I suspect once you get good at it, hitting over obstacles wont be an issue, as you will just bend round them instead. Putting I find fine though and have no problem with the camera. Rarely miss anything other than a really long put with a lot of elevation change. Overall been having a blast. It's not perfect and there are some things I preferred about the Gamecube version (or Everybody's Golf) and I have yet to go online. But it's satisfying game of golf. |
