Considering the rather bonkers hand-over at Rio (featuring the Japanese Prime Minister dressed as Mario) the actual ceremony has been incredibly drab. I guess they could have swung one of two ways, something fun and uplifting to try and cheer everyone up, or something sombre and quiet to reflect the current mood. They definitely went with option 2.

I was kinda hoping for a bunch of go-karts to screech onto the stadium floor with people dressed as Yoshi etc, lots of cool stuff reflecting their culture, technology, heritage etc. What we got was a bit of modern dance whilst somebody was on a treadmill.
