I pay £180 a year for membership of my local club, includes access to all facilities and club owned boats. private bar, changing rooms and showers. If it sails any boat is competitive as at club level races are handicapped depending on the boat you use. But you can pick up something that could race and be competitive for under a grand second hand, but still be big enough to take the family out at a slower pace at the weekend. The smaller one man laser dingys, which are an Olympic class you'd pick up even cheaper. As kids get older or people just become more serious, they can spend more money if they want. A member of my club went to the previous Olympics, not from a wealthy family, just a guy who took to it from a young age. Like alot of lads who take to it, rather than drinking or going to away games at the weekend they travel the country doing sailing competitions. Alot of clubs over the summer months will offer free taster sessions or a lesson or two for free. I'd recommend it to anyone who's even slightly curious to give it a try, adults and young kids alike are usually welcome. One of the most rewarding things I've ever done and fantastic escapism after a long week in the office. |
