I think part of the point is that the only way you can get a US citizen to work for less than a Mexican is to incarcerate them first. Here's some quick (no doubt badly flawed) sums to check: $7.25 p/h minimum wage vs $0.3 p/h prison wage $7.25 x 30 hours per week x 50 weeks = $10,875 minimum wage salary for year $0.3 x 30 hours per week x 50 weeks = $450 prison wage for a year There are well over 2 million prisoners in the US (up from less than 500,000 at the start of the 80s). 25% of the entire world's prison population. So 2 million prisoners times ($10,875 - $450) = simple labour cost saving of over 20 trillion dollars per annum! ($20,000,000,000 per year) That's the kind of saving a nation could get used to, I guess... |
