Music has been about for a millenia. Books centuries. Movies decades. How many of them have changed significantly, in terms of the way they are consumed? Very little, is the answer. The only difference between King Kong '05 and '33 is technology. Better cameras, CGI, surround sound etc, etc. But we, the consumer, consumed them both the exact same way. Similarly, the Arctic Monkeys are a riff of Oasis, who in turn riffed The Beatles.

That is why I am always utterly befuddled at this constant desire for boundary-pushing by the elite. This whiney, nagging, complainy demand that games continue to push things forward. Why does it exist, when other mediums have barely changed, yet continue to thrive either way? Face it, games cannot be reborn. There are only so many ideas that can be explored in 20 YEARS! Nintendogs, innovative? Bah! Tamagotchi 2005 edition! And that pretty much sums up that.

Indeed, the elitist hardcore gamers are so desperate to push this agenda of revolution, that they are fawning the DS with fake praise. A wonderful little console it really is, but its touchpad and stylus has seen a grossly overblown amount of praise, because the elite are so desperate to say "See!? Told you so! Radical innovation liiives!!!" Poppycock. I've said this often enough. If anything, such delusions have been proven to be ill-founded, as we can see hardly any developer utilising the stylus as main controls, but instead always playing second fiddle to the d-pad and face buttons.

You want to know why I'm so down on Nintendo? Because they are taking focus away from where games really need to go. Silly little wands and touchscreens are not the answer. Improved physics, not graphics, which actually affect GAMEPLAY is the REAL way forward. Deeper AI routines that keep you on your toes, and improve the interactivity of the world. These are far more nobler improvements to videogames, then the ability to scratch a bloody dog with your finger!!! And nintendo are the clouding the issue with their usual nonsense, just as they nearly blocked the advent of the CD in the 1990's with their stubborn foolishness.

Because at the end of the day, the essense of what Forza is is still to be found in Pole Position. Same goes for Virtua Fight 5 and Street Fighter. A shooter will always be a shooter, and a fighter will always be a fighter. And as the DS proves, the current control model, that has been carefully evolving over 20 years, will more often than not dominate. We can experience real improvements when the increased horsepower is used to improve our interaction with the world, and not because we can swing an imaginary racket in our living rooms!

OKAY! Pump the brakes! Sorry everyone...I have read all the comments and valid points to everyone. Albundy, even though your writing may be of a spiritual or intellectual style, Id advise to put your opinions into simple terms. I got criticsed once for bad writing (rightly so too my Chinese english aint perfect you know) but my ideas were good. Yours however i find good to read, and your points valid but up to a point.

Being a University second year student doing media marketing and cultural honours, as well as having editing several magazines beforehand (haha english still bad though) I would say your arguements have no coherence to your main point...Is the DS now a gimmick? Oh no? Its "welcome"? C'mon mate make up your mind. Contradictions often appear in complicated and incoherent arguements...such as yours. Make your arguements simple like TGs or make your sentences shorter!

Anyway I apologise to anyone getting annoyed about the above point. back on topic...

I feel you are being a bit defensive don't you think? Media has changed ever since mankind was born. Signs in Egypt and Rom has portrayed many stories and histories, and so has our textbooks nowadays! Its a passive media and its received by the audience without interaction. When it comes to TV however its a different matter. We watch TV for the stories and amazing images (in some cases just the nice imagery), but relating to your example,of Kong, its just absolutly rediciulous.

Kong's technology has improved yes, and that may be the only difference. However! The experience has definatly changed. Some of those experiences are of the amazing images, but most of it, is actually seing how modern directors, actors, photographers make of the technology! You know even if Steven Spielberg right now had the technology of the future, if he can't be arsed to make a good movie with that technology it will never be a good movie! You get my drift?

You criticsing Nintendo's move on revolutionising the industry with an anology of a passive media such as films (rather than what games are, a active media) is obsolete. They arent there to spit out realistic graphics at you, they are there to re-new gaming or in our words, the experience. PS3 and 360 I have nothing against, well maybe 360, dont like their games much see "), but they improve upon existin notions, and thus creating a deeper experience (see that magical word?) for existing control methods such as AIs and so forth.

Anyway my final point (nearly there), to finish off, is you can never compare games with other media, you can when talking about their filmography or photography, as such these conventions often intervine with each other (MGS being a great example). Also Nintendo is only trying something new...just as when HD was announced, it was something new, a new experience and this is exactly what Nintendo is doing.

CREATING NEW EXPERIENCES, and NEW WAYS TO PLAY.
How can you judge so quickly in a stage where people havent even reviewed a single game? Have you even played it yourself? Bet you won't argue if Nintendo was the most powerful console and yet still had Wii's capabilities. Anyway you ve just wasted half an hour of my time. felt like i just written an essay. pff,...

Albundy just remember, the Media evolves through change, and change is only accepted by the masses, which is why its a good thing Nintendo is doing it. Even if things do turn ugly, its a good thing that they tried.
