According to Google it looks like its something to do with the Transition Formula Entry settings

"When the Transition Formula Entry check box is selected, Microsoft Excel allows you to enter and evaluate formulas in a manner more consistent with the behavior of Lotus 1-2-3.

The Transition Formula Entry option allows you to open Lotus 1-2-3 files without losing or changing information. Note that whenever a Lotus 1-2-3 file is opened in Microsoft Excel, these options are automatically turned on. "
    From this thread http://www.computing.net/answers/office/excel-date-problem/10114.html

    Select File > Options.

Click Advanced in the navigation pane on the left.

Scroll all the way down to the section "Lotus compatibility". Make sure that the check box in this section is clear (not ticked), as well as both check boxes in the last section "Lotus compatibility Settings for".
