I don't mind No Prayer for the Dying - it was the first Maiden album I could get at time of release and it was also the first time I saw them live on the Intercity Express Tour, so I've got some good memories from that, plus ears that rang for several days after. I'm of to view that Seventh Son was their last great album. I enjoy both No Prayer and Fear (which I think is a better sounding production than anything since) but it didn't seem the same after Smith left. I've also enjoyed the rest of the later albums to lesser extents but not heard much that I've felt vital, and the plodding nature of a lot of the tracks just leaves me wanting something more. Book of Souls managed to recapture something and It felt like they were enjoying playing the songs on the record. As much as The Red and the Black is over-long and repetitive, there is a sense that they're enjoying jamming out and that was nice to hear. I just hope the compositions and structures are a bit more varied on the new one. |
