2 PCs and 1 DM? Or 1 DM 1 PC? We play 1 DM and 2 PCs every so often, with premade modules. It works ok I guess. Hardest part is scaling down encounters to make sure I don't kill them - I reduce the number of enemies, reduce hit points or remove features like multi attack. There's no healer so I'm also generous with healing potions. I'm more interested in getting them through the story than making their lives a living nightmare (unless that's what the story calls for >

edit: One other thing, I'll often have an NPC hint that they would be interested in joining or straight up volunteer their help.
