I doubt there was anything outright illegal going on, but I assume some creative accounting kept duties and taxes down. Stuff like "Yep, it's just simple board games - you know, cardboard and plastic, no more than $10 per unit" when containers came into Europe. Now the rules have changed that you have to prove the full VAT has been paid on the final price to the customer, else that will be collected on delivery (plus fees), so the companies have had to ensure they've done this. As that is more than the typical sales tax in, say, the US, they are charging this on to the backers. Some campaigns are averaging this across the world, or folding it into the delivery cost, or just setting a price for the KS which includes some of the tax, so no more is charged later. Others are just going "yep, we'll collect shipping, and another 20% from you later" - the whole business of collecting it later is to avoid the 10% Kickstarter fees too. |
