I read the book when it came out. I wouldn't say the references were cynical at all - the guy knows his stuff. The film, sure, has some modern references it is, but when it's directed by one of the guy's responsible for a large portion of modern pop culture, I think we can give him a pass.
Still haven't seen Ready Player One yet but something about the whole enterprise just seems really cynical to me. Like paying someone to yell movie references at me.
Going to see it tonight, can't wait.
