So, I got my first off road bike (cheapy btwin rockrider 560) about a month ago. I've done "keeping fit/keeping less fat" road riding off and on for years with 50-100 mile rides not uncommon.

The best bits so far are having all the danger being down to me rather than other road users trying to take me out. And its a lot of fun living at the foot of the South Downs with a lot of great riding within reach. But what's hurting is the extra load on my upper body. On the road I can ride up Beachy Head without a problem, but trying it off road is fine on my legs but kills me on the arms/shoulders/chest. Up/down hill seems a lot tougher to me on the upper body.

Do I just need to man up a little? Anyone done the transition and how long did it take to get comfortable?
