    Mountain bikes are great mowgli but only if you genuinely plan on doing some offroading. Otherwise, if it's trails in the country or around towns, a regular bike is better. Lots of nice trail bikes for that money; earlier in the thread we were talking about Specialized models which I like a lot (some of them) at that money.

    You need to get into 1000+ to get a mountain bike that will actually get you regularly around a mountain (only IMO though).

    flat bar hybrid for around town?
    cyclocross of trails and trekking?
    road bike for only on tarmac/asphalt?
