    @THFourteen

I suppose you could just post a Daily Mail link to educate me.

By making them lose their jobs completely?
So it's better to have a job that isn't really a job with no guarantee of any hours and if you can't get into work within 15 mins of them telling you they need you for work you may be sacked? Right gotcha.
I don't know, i'm not an expert in this particular situation to know which of the two options is better, having no job at all, stuck trying to find another similar job in a dying industry or a job with an income that could be terminated at short notice.

However it sounds like (as with most things) you are an expert, so i'll defer to you.
Also I don't believe I'm an expert on most things, that's just you projecting your own insecurities. Actually I used to work for DWP many moons ago and the people I encountered absolutely hated zero hour contracts because they were the only kinds of employment they could get quickly but it left them in a harrowing limbo where they might not be able to afford to buy shopping or pay the bills/rent. At least with being unemployed and on benefits you know what's coming and can at least try and budget. With that kind of employment they may get quickly let go and be outside the time limit to do a rapid reclaim for their benefits. By allowing some like Ashley to buy Debenhams you essentially sanction his bullshit and give free reign for every cunt to continue the practice.

Nobody is entirely sure what Ashley is up to. He's been aggressively buying up seemingly random suffering high street chains wherever he can, and there doesn't appear to be any obvious strategy behind it.

The two schools of thought are he's being a pure opportunist and just buying these businesses cheap because he can. The other is that he has a plan to launch some sort of new venture that requires vast amounts of high street real estate. Personally I'd go with the latter.

Either way, there was really no safety for the business or its staff in selling to Ashley.

You've hit the nail on the head, I'm massively insecure. God bless experts like you for being around to help me out when I need it the most.

I'm not sure that the majority of the 20,000+ people who are employed by Debenhams are on, or could ever be on a zero hours contract, but then having never worked for the DWP I defer to your superior knowledge.

When did I say people from Debenhams were on zero hour contracts when we were talking about people who work for Sports Direct? Also this smarmy cunt attitude you're displaying is a bit ridiculous, I take it you're annoyed because earlier today I said you generalised a section of people, which you did, and now you're being an arsehole.

Here. I question why its better for (20000+) people at Debenhams to lose their jobs and you respond referring to what I take to mean zero hours contracts, which I assume really only applies to the retail and warehouse staff, rather than most of those 20000.

And as for smarmy cunt attitude, do you want to read how you responded to my post and then tell my who's a smarmy cunt?

It's not just today is it, there were a couple of digs last week which I just ignored. I get that we don't share the same beliefs and ideals but there's no need to be holier than thou about everything.

FWIW there are two types of people in the world, those who think cyclists are cunts, and cyclists.

I don't think I'm holier than thou, far from it, like I said to you I'm very guilty of writing bollocks. I just don't agree that the cunt Mike Ashley is the way forward. I'm up for a quick fumble in a cubicle if you want to kiss and make up. I'm also not a cyclist BTW.

I'm no expert either, but it sort of looks like the old mainstream high street retail model is dying. The chains that continue to flourish seem to fall into one of two extremes.

At one end, you've got the high-end boutique stores, like the designer-label clothing stores, plus Hotel Chocolat and the like. They're doing ok on the basis of high margins and having their retail outlets backed up by well-run online stores. Often, the bricks-and-mortar stores are basically just there for advertising.

At the other end, you've got the mass-market warehouses that stay in business and compete with online shopping by ruthlessly driving down costs at every point in their supply and labour chain. Ashley - whatever his sins - has made a success of this at Sports Direct and clearly thinks he can apply the model to other types of retail. It does tend to be shit for employees (they are just an overhead to be minimised), but the alternative is probably bankrupcy.
