I'm a fan of the BBC and don't mind the licence fee... but the development of dedicated voice assistant software (?!?) makes you seriously question the decision making.

They're not developing voice assistant software.
They're implementing a speech recognition system, just like Sky, Netflix, BT, etc
What's the alternative? Sit there and do nothing while other media companies implement it? and then get slagged off for not having it?

They get moaned at whatever they do

It is called a voice assistant in the headline and first two paragraphs to be fair.

It's the developing it bit, that I was focusing on
They're using the Microsoft system, not developing a new one.

A voice assistant makes sense on a cross-provider aggregating platform where search is fundamental to the experience.

It would make complete sense if it were speech recognition functionality being added to iPlayer/Sounds where the user is specifically using BBC content, but it's a standalone assistant to be added to devices which can only playback results from the BBC. It's just a bit weird.

The nuance about developing vs implementing may even be the answer - with Microsoft front and centre, it'd be interesting to dive into the procurement and funding.

By Microsoft Technology it presumably means they’re just using the cognitive services in Azure, rather than rebranding Cortana. That still has a hefty load of development involved - I started testing it out for fairly basic translation services and quickly hit a wall of significant effort.

Yup, don't think I ever saw my Italian grandparents drink wine from a wine glass. Usually a standard highball or tumbler.

Little Britain pulled from iPlayer because of blackface.

No loss to me, although I did see some horrible comments on FB.
