Thinking about a 8800gt card, along with everyone else. But i have a socket 939 mobo that doesn't support pci express 2.0. I've read that it's backwardly compatible so it should work shouldn't it? i'm due a mobo, cpu and card upgrade but not all in the same month. 3700+, 2Gb and a 7800GT with 200 quid to spend this month. |
would 8800gt cards (pci express 2.0) work with pci 1.0 slots?

Registered 16 years agoDo you mean your MB has a spare PCI 1.0 slot, or a PCI-e 1.0 slot that your current GFX card is in?
If the former, then no. If the later, then it depends. I think the new PCI-e 2.0 cards work in 1.0b slots. I think you only run into real problems if you start wanting to run dual 2.0 cards in 1.0 slots.
Best bet is to google your mobo and the card you are looking at and see what info you can find. -

Of COURSE an 8800GT will work on that mobo - that's why PCI-e 2.0 is backwards compatible.

The transition to PCIe 2.0 won't be anything like the move from AGP to PCIe. The cards and motherboards are backwards and forwards compatible. PCIe 1.0 and 1.1 compliant cards can be plugged into a PCIe 2.0 motherboard, and PCIe 2.0 cards can be plugged into older motherboards. This leaves us with zero impact on the consumer due to PCIe 2.0, in more ways than one.
Like I said, it'll work just fine in your s939 mobo. -

Registered 14 years agoYep, it will, no problem at all.
Bear in mind you can get the new GTS 512 for 200 quid now, if that's your maximum budget. Better cooler as well as extra shaders and stock speeds. I fucking love my one! -
thanks to all. mull, is the GTS quieter? That would win it for me if that was the case.
