Call of Duty 4 problems in 1080p

    Hiya

I bought a new 40" sony bravia 1080p tv at weekend. I bought COD4 for it as it is a 1080p game.

My ps3 is set to 1080p, and on the XMB ment the TV info in the corner says 1080p. However when I put on COD4 once the game loads it switched to 720p??

Why is this? I thought there must be something wrong with the machine so I have singstar - the only other 1080p game I own and put it in and it runs and plays at 1080p.

SO i put COD4 in again and run it and it changes to 720p.

Is there a problem with the disc or something? The settings in my TV are right to run the PS3 homepage in 1080p and also Singstar - its just COD4!?!? There are no options in the game menu about 1080p that I can see?

    Please help me!!! :-(

This might be a really silly question but does it actually say 1080p on the back of the box? I had no idea that CoD4 supported that at native Res, and as the PS3 doesn't upscale games it'd make sense for it to be 720.

You wouldn't notice any difference at 1080p anyway, not on a 40 inch screen.
All depends on how well the game is made to take advantage of the higher res, and how far away he sits. It's certainly not a limitation of the human eye at that screen size.

    Hi

I have figured it out. Thanks for the suggestions but yes - of course I checked it is 1080p - that is the whole reason I bought it.

COD4 has problems auto switching to 1080p on ps3. The xbox 360 version finds it straight away however on the PS3 after scouring the net - it is a know problem. You have to go into custom settings of the HDMI and turn off 720p and all other resolutions apart from 1080p and then it runs.

And boy oh boy - YES you can tell the difference!! I bought it cos my mate has the same TV and a 360 and saw it on that so got it for my PS3 and the larger your TV is, the greater the clarity of 1080p. Hence why they dont make many, or any i dont think less than 37"

Anyway - its sorted now so thanks. And for those in any doubt - i saw the difference between 720p and 1080p on my mates 360 on his TV, hence why I bought the same TV and COD4 for my PS3. God knows why they made Singstar in 1080p - thats the only other game I own which runs at that - its not like you need the clarity but for games like COD4 itis certainly noticeable if you know what you are looking at.

    Cheers

A lot of games which support 1080p, run better at 720p anyway (better framerate, less tearing).

Some games intentionally even run at 720p despite supporting 1080p, because the developers were aware of issue at the higher resolution.

In most cases i would suggest letting the game (and thereby its gevelopers) decide whether to run at 720p or 1080p, not force it to run at 1080p to look better, but run worse.

I'm glad you said that as I have a 42" 1080p TV and have just bought a PS3. Will be picking up COD4 soon.

CoD4 is ass. Virtua Tennis 3 looks great in propaa 1080p

I love the VT series and I've recently seen the 360 version of VT3. To be honest it was ok, nothing special. Just seems a slight graphical improvement on VT2. Certainly not next generation level.

    And this was on a 1080p 42".

Are these settings in the PS3 options, or TV?

They are in the console settings. You do need to remember to change it back to play your other games which is a pain but hopefully they may patch the game. Games like singstar make your TV autmatically pick up the 1080p but its just COD4 that doesnt. So just do into Settings, Display, HDMI - then instead of selecting automatic, select custom and it comes up with a list of several options compatible. Just untick the boxes and leave 1080p ticked and it will run.

Like i say - when you wanna play uncharted or anything else at 720p remember to put it back. Its no major hassle as only takes about 10 seconds to do. But even still - would be better if you didnt have to do it at all

    Good luck mate

Its not "forcing" the game to run as such - becasue you cant force a game to run which hasnt been programmed to run at 1080p. Its just a bug which they admitted. Hence hopefully should be getting fixed.

I fount this out from typing COD4 resolution probelms in search engines and you find several sites saying "Infinity Ward state COD4 does run at 1080p". Which is where I found the tips on how to select it.

Hey ho - either way, i get what you are saying, but if a game had 1080p on the box it has been programmed to run at that and if the TV's arnt picking it up - theres something wrong with the code in comparison to all other games which automatically select the highest resolution the game is capable or running at.

Good man!! Funnily enough Planet eart is the first DVD i put on my new tv! The shallow seas episode! Unfortunately i dont have it on Blu Ray which would be even sharper but still looked stunning on a high res 40" er. Enjoy!!

i understand this is the case with call of duty 4, but i disagree with you final statement. Not all game will automatically chose the highest capable resolution, some games favour 720p over 1080p despite being theoreticaly capable of both.

    It is this one...
    Linky...

Just left a post on the Technology Forums @ EG just saying how amazing the thing is... I paid £714 for it with a £25 code from Dixons...

Read a few reviews but the review above tipped it for me...

I upgraded form my 32" Samsung which is still great @ 720p. There is nothing wrong with this one even after 2.5 years. My Girlfriend is going to stick this on her wall and hopefully it will see her for a good few years too...
TBH I think it would take a lot for me to get anything else but a Samsung in the future. 2.5 years of no hassle viewing... Long may it continue :-)

Ignoring the spam bump for a moment. Loving the guy insisting he got COD4 to run at 1080p and it was much clearer. COD4 wasn't even in HD on console, was it?
