Greetings! I got a ps2 last summer, noticing they were only 60 quid, but apart from LOTR: The Third Age and LOTR: Two Towers, I haven't really played on it much until I got Shadow of the Colossus recently. WHICH IS AMAZING, btw. So, I'm mainly a PC gamer, but have got a Wii recently as well. Before the Wii, the last console I owned was a mega drive, and the only playstation game I played was FF7 (which I completed on a loaned playstation). FF7 remains one of my favourite games ever. So anyway, as you can imagine, i've missed out on some CONSOLE ACTION for the last, well, decade, so what can you lot recommend to me as a BEST OF PS2 or "Can't Miss" games. I'm up for trying any genre really, although preferably not FPS as I can't work out how to play them on gamepads. I've tried! Okami is the first thing that springs to mind, but I hear that is coming out for Wii, so I should probably wait. Any other suggestions? Oh and, obviously include Playstation 1 games in this list too! Cheers! |
Best of PS2?

Registered 16 years agoOo, cheers, should have probably searched for that thread before
I'll have a peruse!
And Feanor - excellent suggestion re: Res Evil, but already played it on the Wii
I did absolutely love it though, definitely my favourite Wii game thus far. Any more suggestions up that alley are welcomed! I suppose I should maybe try some of the earlier games in the Resident Evil series too, ive only played the others whilst at mates' houses etc.
As for ICO - I actually technically own it. My mate said if I bought it, he'd give me his SoTC and I'd give him my ICO, so we can play both and swap when we're done with the other. So that base is covered too. I can't wait, I hear it's absolutely amazing. -

Registered 16 years agoCheers for suggestions all, I will look into them all in detail tomorrow.
Devil May Cry and Metal Gear Solid are series' that have been raved about for a long time, but I have never tried either. So I shall! I will have a look at all the other suggestions tomorrow though, so keep them coming!
And yeah, I already have Deus Ex and Half life
- Deus Ex remains my favourite game of all time, btw, so good, if sarcastic, idea
edit: PS, even though this is a PS2 thread, I am of course open to any gamecube suggestions too since I have a wii and a mate gave me his old GC pad! -

If you enjoyed SotC then you're 99% likely to enjoy Ico.
Definitely get Resident Evil 4 if you haven't played it on the GC or the Wii.
I'd say the opposite. If you enjoyed SotC then you're not all that likely to enjoy Ico as it's quite a different game.
I'd add to that and say both GoW games, MGS2, FFX, Freedom Fighters, Hitman Contacts, Capom vs SNK 2 and Viewtiful Joe. -

I really wanted to like GodHand but just couldn't play past the first stage. Does it get any better after that? -

Most of the stages are: beat baddies, kill boss, watch cheesy cutscene. But it's just so damn fun. Hard, but fun.
You either love or hate the game.

Registered 15 years agoPS2 has a kind of craze in like many hack-n-slash type games that are worth a try:
Onimusha series
God of War series
Devil May Cry series.
God of War being an essential try.
Couple of decent shoot em ups to try in R-Type Final and Gradius V which can be really nice in eye candy in explosions but maybe not too different if you've played many other shoot'em ups.
Platformers there are a few worth a go. I've recently tried the Sly series and my impressions were very good of it, definitely worth a go.
GTA series is very famed on the PS2 with GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas. Sans Andreas is worth a go, though I'm not much of a GTA fan myself so couldn't really get into it like that.
RPGs are definitely worth a go, Final Fantasy series is pretty awesome. -

Registered 16 years agoI heard loads of good things about Black but just couldn't fathom the controls. FPSs on consoles and myself don't match, alas! It did look like it would be fun if I could have hit anyone though!
God of Wars, Silent Hills, Resident Evils etc, will all be bought soon enough! I actually have Silent Hill 2 for the Pc but haven't got round to actually trying it yet (just bought it last year cuz I saw it for uber-cheap). So will probably get on that once i've finished Final Fantasy 12. -

Registered 15 years agoNo mentions yet, so: Shadow Hearts & Shadow Hearts: Covenent. Both simply fantastic RPGs, but you may want to complete a few shorter titles before getting addicted.
There's also From the New World but I haven't gotten around to that yet.
Oh, and Global Defence Force is awesome too. -
I see the heathens failed to mention Ace Combat 4 once again (provided you have no 360).
And get Gran Turismo 4, if you like driving games just a little bit.
And obviously Ico. -

Registered 16 years agoDo you mean Ace Combat 5? I can't find any of the other ones on this site, meaning they must be EONS OLD or something.
Shadow Hearts eh - looks intriguing. Too many games! -
MGS 3 is probably my favourite game for the PS2, it really blew me away which I wasn't expecting after MGS2. It's all down to the great story, which keeps it's feet firmly on the ground this time. And you don't have to have played the other 2 games before it, since it is more of a prequel.
Apart from that, God of War 1 &2 are great too.
