Multiformat
The Mean Machines Archive has scans from Mean Machines, Mean Machines Sega, Nintendo Magazine System and Computer & Video Games.
I still have every single one of the mean machines magazines right up to the point where the split into seperate formats. -
Your Sinclair and Your Spectrum were my first forays into mags, then Mean Machines is the only one after that I remember clearly.
I wrote one of these letters. See if you can guess which one. I'd actually copied it word for word from the 'example letter' that their competition printed each month on their own letters page, but they never said anything. They changed my location from 'Glasgow' to 'Parkhurst' though, and I didn't understand why so I showed it to my mum and she got me into trouble for writing a letter in which I admitted to an act of arson.

Registered 15 years agomagazines I got were some gameboy magazine which was really good in the days of the gameboy original, the OPM(official playstation magazine) which was very good and the odd gamemaster. Magazines were excellent in making you long after various games, and the demos on the playstation magazine got me buying them too.(obscure titles too..) -

Registered 15 years agoN64/NGC was probably my favourite game magazine back in the day. I didn't even know Super Play existed until after it switched to N64 Magazine, by which point it was too late to buy it, but I imagine I would've loved it too. Apparently Wil Overton did lots of artwork for it and I always thought it was a shame when he left N64 Magazine (supposedly to work for Rare, although none of their artwork I've seen has resembled his so maybe they have him working on something totally different).
N64 was hilarious though, especially their reviews of terrible games. My favourite was, I think, in their Mortal Kombat Mythologies review: "This could only be less enjoyable if it squirted sulphuric acid into your face as you played it". They also similarly ripped through Aero Gauge, Carmageddon, Crusin' USA, Clayfighter and of course the now infamous Superman 64.
They also did a huge 8, 10, 12 page review spread when something huge came out, which in the days of the N64 was really exciting to me; there were so few good games out for the console and such a long wait between each big release, that when each release did come along my friends and I who owned N64s all couldn't wait to go into town and buy it. So when the magazine devoted such a huge amount of its pages to that one game, detailing as much as they could and filling the entire article with pictures and little text boxes relating to various aspects of it, I though it was great.
Finally, they printed two of my letters

Registered 16 years agoCVG was good when you had to type in the free games. It was also massive.
You usually had to wait until the next week to get the position of a missing comma which was stopping the game from working. -

Super Play was awesome, I used to read my mate's copy every month and I didn't even have a SNES. Unfortunately I don't really have the space for old magazines, there are lots I wish I hadn't thrown out/ given away/ recycled but I've rarely had much of a choice. That's why I find sites with old scans or transcripts so diverting.
Man, I loved Super Play - awesome mag! Used to have some kicking around in the loft before someone decided to throw them out! WHHHY!?!!!
Also, getting the official Nintendo magazine in the post (if I remember right) when I was young was always a real thrill. Come to think of it - I think I might have some of those still around somewhere. -

Registered 17 years agoIt was always ZZap 64 and Amiga Power.
But I even bought the odd copy of Commodore International Computing (that's what I think it was called).
Edit: With regards C&VG. They was had a huge hex type in listing for the C64 which would make games run 50% faster. In the April addition. Spent about 3 days typing the thing in and then to have it run...
The screen filled up with a big raspberry (with suitable sound effect) and told me I was as April fool.
It was worth it just for that. -

I was only ever a PC gamer for a short period (about a year) which coincided with Charlie Brooker's stint on PC Zone. Great stuff. I also used to like Game Zone from the same stable, but hardly anyone seems to remember it, so it may have been a figment of my imagination.
I discovered quite recently that Charlie Brooker's first writing job was on the comic Oink!, another publication I read religiously as a kid. I think I might have a case for blaming him for the fact I find it amusing to offend people... -

Registered 12 years agoHi all,
I've just posted a load of computer magazines on ebay, including issues 1 to 16 of Super Play. Issue One still has the badge on front and the postcards inside - pretty much as new. If you type in the ebay search 'Super Play Magazine One' and then click on the item and then 'view seller's other items' you'll see loads of mags. My ebay ID is ron_burgdandy
Thought you might all like to know as you all seem keen fans!

Oh, they were great. I found my collection the other day, and stuck up a couple of the awesome posters that you can find in the centre - Zangief Vs Guile and Chun-Li Vs Blanka both have pride of my wall. -

Registered 14 years agoSpeaking of SFII, does anyone else remember getting those ace monthly booklets from Gamepro Mag showing you every move for the SNES version, including power percentage etc, they did about 4 of them I think.
Can't belive I even collected Gamepro thinking back, the actual mag was about 3/4 adverts. -

Registered 13 years agolucky_jim - you're not alone in remembering Game Zone, the early multi-format edition used to be one of my favourite magazines. I've been keeping an eye on eBay... and what do you know, Ron BurgDandy has posted a couple on there. Hey-o!
Also speaking of SFII, does anyone remember the Mean Machines Streetfighter II handbook that had tons of features and combos for every character? -

Registered 14 years agoMy parents kept most of my old gaming mags (as well as a LOT of fishing mags). Anyway, they have a large pile of Super Play, or might be Super Action in their living room which they keep suggesting I ought to take away one day.
Is there much of a market for selling these? And if so, what's the easiest way of getting shot of them (besides recycling them, obviously)? -

Registered 20 years agoI've got a few of the earliest Computer and Video Games mags. Back when they used to publish code listings at the back of the mag. It's blimmin' hilarious looking back at the terrible hand-drawn ads for games and some of the reviews of upcoming stuff like (WOOH!) Terror Dactyl 4D.

Shift 100 odd mags on Ebay - christ, I'm far too lazy for that! -
I'm browsing through the scans of The One on the OP's site. The nostalgia is crushingly great/horrible. x_X
