I recall iMacs have to be late 2012 or newer. My late 2012 Mac Mini just squeezed in luckily. It’s the last decent Mac Mini they sold before they inexplicably only offered dual cores. Quad core still runs like a champ with an SSD and 16gb ram. As does my old Thunderbolt Display. I was umming and aahing over buying it for ages in 2013. Massively overpriced and dated specs at purchase, and I was hesitant because of the possibility of a newer model. 5 years later, still no new display, and dated and non-retina though it is, it’s still a magnificent display. Registered 9 years agoYeah, you're right my iMac is just too old. The glitches with the App Store on my machine were down to LittleSnitch blocking some processes, so managed to check last night. I really want the Darth Vader iMac but 4 grand is WAY too much for inter web, email and iTunes. -

I regret upgrading my late '14 5k iMac (hybrid hard drive) to Mojave. I'm noticing the first signs of slowdown when booting up, it's always been so fast and snappy but now takes a moment to think about it.
Other than that though... I like the new Dark mode. And I like that my Chrome version got updated as well. And I like that things don't seem to be crashing.
I've also had my first crashes, specifically when trying to use Steamlink on the TV from it. The Steam app needs an update apparently.

Registered 18 years agoI've been having some trouble with my external monitor but I'm not sure if it's the dongle, the cable or Mojave.
It's if I've unplugged and connected to a projector and then try to plug in my usual monitor again. The error screen is saying no signal. The dongle is the main suspect though. I will get back with tedious updates. -

Registered 18 years agoIs the dongle Displaylink? I know they screwed up drivers for that a few updates back. I think something else went funny with Mojave but it escapes me right now. -

Registered 15 years agoIdotic question time!
I've been on Macbook Air for years now but just bought a desktop PC so trying to export photos to external drive but every time I set up an export photos crashes a couple of hundred photos in. Does anyone know of any means in getting your photos encompassed in that one 'photos' file without using the photos app?
It's about 187gb so I've tried doing it in small batches but does same no matter which photos I select. I'm doing it from a Seagate drive (exporting and importing to a folder on the same device) I've also tried transferring the photos folder to my Trasncend 256GB card in the SD card socket.
I've done a fair bit of googling but can't see much of a solution -

Registered 16 years agoHow do you mean Mr Patrick? AFAIUI, you can delve into the app's directory ('Open Package Contents') and find the photos stored within (/Contents/Library), meaning you could bypass Photos.app and move the files manually. -

Registered 15 years agoCheers for quick reply chaps, that would be pretty sweet if I can find the full contents in package contents, I was looking in finder and only seeing the general photos file.
I'll have a play tonight. -

Registered 18 years agoI remember struggling with the same issue some years ago. I have a vague memory of finding a third party app that helped out in some way. Also a post by Marco Arment.
Found this just now it might help
http://osxdaily.com/2015/04/22/show-original-file-from-photos-app-mac-finder-osx/
I can't remember how I solved it or even if I ever did. What I do remember is that I swore never to use iPhotos or Photos ever again. (I'm using Google Photos now so it's not as if I'm free and independent) -

Registered 18 years agoAnyone heard of or used macback.co.uk? They're quoting me over £500 for my old Macbook (over twice as much as what Apple have offered), and will collect it for free too. Reviews online seem very positive, but it all seems a bit too good to be true... -

Registered 16 years ago@greg_wha At least you can use the app store on yours, hah. I'm still rocking an iMac from 2006, the first Intel one. It can't go past Snow Leopard and is a slow, laggy mess (2GB RAM). Barely use it anymore. Fine for word processing though. That reminds me, I should fire up the old, 2003 PowerBook sometime to see it's good for anything. Weighs a tonne. -

IIRC, you'd need more than 187GB free on your MacOS drive. I had all of my photos downloaded, but it still needed loads of space to cache my videos before exporting them to USB stick. That was last week. Cleared loads of space, and it eventually worked.
I use Directory Statistics X to visualise where my space is going, but you may have another means. Clear some room on your 'C drive' and try again. -

Registered 16 years agoI loved my 2003 PowerBook, my first computer that wasn’t a hand me down. Took a bank loan when I started uni and spunked 2 grand on it, got an iPod as well, the one with 4 buttons above the wheel and sick red leds. Lasted me until 2008 I think. Just put in a PPI claim for that bank loan, so let’s see if I get anything back! -

Registered 16 years ago@elstoof I bought mine and got an iPad with it too, this was my first year of uni, I think. One of the old-school iPads. 40GB. The PowerBook lasted until 2011 and I retired it for an 11" MBA, which is still going and is my main laptop at the moment. I was going to upgrade this year, but I may hold out for another year. -
