    @nickthegun,
Well I certainly don't want to be that guy. :)
Thanks for the help. I'll mention it to my local apple store and see what they say.

So I recently got BT Infinity...

I thought I'd hook up an FTP client on my mac and try to see what speeds I can get... on my PC I used to use Flash FXP which I loved, was really straight forward and gave me all the info I need.

I had a scout round for Mac FTP clients that people recommend and came up with FileZilla.

I've been battling with is since... is this really the best FTP client on the Mac? Can people give recommendations...

The other thing I've noticed is that under heavy network load my Mac slows down, mouse jumping around, heavy CPU load... I'm off now to investigate but has anyone heard anything like this before?

edit to also ask: is there a decent Rar client?
I've been using UnRarX and it does the job but it's nothing like as good as WinRar... it alos doesn't extract multi part compressed files that don't hve a .RAR file with them.. e.g. all the files are numbered .r00, .r01 etc

    ta!

CuteFTP gets a lot of praise, mainly for being free but it's pretty good.
I never got on with FileZilla, only used it briefly and then gave up.

Transmit from Panic is very good.

As for your RAR files, I use Stuffit Expander. Although I don't use multi-part RAR's so can't say if it handles them or not.

Stuffit was on my list but I think you have to pay where as others are free... (edit: doh ... followed your link and it's plastered all over the site "FREE FREE FREE") pay for what you get and all that..

Transmit looks excellent from the website will check it out

    Ta :)

FileZilla is already winding me up

I think Stuffit Expander is free, you may have to pay for the versions that compress as well as expand.

ok the unarchiver looks like the one...

    Another absolute noob question...

I download a compressed file and it sticks it on my Downloads folder... (Chrome setting I know) it extracts the file when I double click and extracts the .app file to the same folder (another setting I know) ... my question is.... should I be dragging those .app files to the Applications folder?

What's the standard way of doing things like that on the Mac?
I know PC would be Program Files or an installer but I've come across quite a few .dmg packages that don't include a copy to applications folder option... I'm presuming I do this manaully and then when I first access it click Yes on the "This is an internet download and I'm going to presume you're a noob. Is this OK?" dialog?

I drag them to the Applications folder.

    No idea what CuntyXUK64 does . . .

I must admit, I do keep my games and my applications in separate folders.

yeah I figured the answer would be "wherever you want" but coming from a PC that still sounds odd ;)

Great shout on Transmit by the way... 7 day trial and I'm using it for 5 minutes and it's INFINITELY better than ShiteZilla.... cheers!

I'm about to buy another Mac. I had one briefly a few years ago but not long enough to fully get the osx way. If I buy a Macbook on ebay and the seller is advertising that it comes with a whole load of software is there anyway of telling that it's been pirated? The adverts that I've been looking at list the software but no images showing purchased boxed software.

Unless they specify that the Mac comes with the software and install disks, be wary. It'll likely be that the licence for the software won't be transferable.

Depends on how honest you are obviously.

Cheeky buggers. I'll avoid them then. TBH it's for iphone development so I don't really need iLife, PS etc. Thanks HH.

iLife is free with any new Mac so that shouldn't be a problem.
It's stuff like Photoshop and Dreamweaver that's dodgy.

Sitting using my brand new iMac and everything is going perfectly (apart from the one dead pixel right in the middle of the screen), and then my internet connection goes. I try and connect but it keeps on saying it's timed out.

I can connect on my old laptop fine and on my iPhone. What the hell is going on? The signal strength is ok. Any ideas?
  • Deleted user 2 November 2010 23:00:54
Never mind, back on now. That was weird, it couldn't connect for at least half an hour. Hope it doesn't happen again.

I've never owned or really even used a Mac before (got plenty of iPods and iPhones though).

However I may soon be able to spoil myself with a frivolous gadget purchase and I am considering a Macbook Air.

No need to point out things such as "very expensive compared with another branded Windows PC/Laptop" and I already own a decent Windows laptop, desktop and Netbook so this would be purely a treat and my first ever Mac. Also the availability of multiple Windows PC's means that I would have no real need to dual boot Mac OS and Windows on the Mac.

Main useage would be sofa surfing, experiencing the Mac OS and to make my inner gadget demon smile.

    Any thoughts ?
Air being my first Mac a Bad idea ?
Anything a Mac newbie should know prior to such a purchase ?
  • Deleted user 10 November 2010 13:00:13
Not much in the way of advice but I say go for it! Nothing wrong with getting an Air as your first mac, the full size trackpad is still on there and that thing is quite simply unmatched.

If you know any students use them to get a student discount. It's about 12- 15%.
And the age old argument of 'similar specs for double the price' doesn't hold much water when stuff like the trackpad is considered. And of course the simple fact that macs hold their value incredibly well. So in the future when you sell it you should get most of your money back while the 'half price system with similar specs' will be going for £50 on ebay.

The Air should should be fine unless you're planning on doing any heavy duty video editing or gaming. I have heard that the bottom end 11" has problems playing HD video on youtube, so that could be something to bare in mind.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, get as much memory as you can afford - all Macs like lots of RAM and Airs even more so. I'd rather drop the CPU speed and spent the difference on memory, myself, but that might be a little extreme.

    Edit: typoo

    That's shocking if true.

    It's in the Engadget review.

we did notice some occasional stuttery behavior while scrolling heavy webpages and galleries, and full HD video in YouTube did not play back smoothly. (Maybe we can blame that on Flash... we're sure Apple does)
