OK. I'm with you on that. Especially now that I got the flimsiest grip on chinese caligraphy and can see that most characters people get tattooed look like absolute shit. It gets worse when my wife tells me that a majority of them are gibberish.

When I was on Koh pangnan in 2004 I stayed close to a place that made the most amazing buddhist hindu mashup tattoos. Looked proper evil. Never seen anything like it since.

One of my (female) friends got an Atari symbol on her deltoid as a teenager. Still looks nice, although increasingly obscure. Useful as an age-judgement tool though.

I'm considering getting a tattoo. I want something meaningful, but subtle and artistic, that taps into the zeitgeist.

I'm thinking about getting this as a line drawing.

I know it's a big deal to get one in full view, but all my others are hidden away and as such are kinda pointless in a sense.

That's one of the reasons I'm taking so long over the design. It has to be perfect. But I want it to be something people actually see.

Besides, it's only my lower arm. It's not like my face or neck, or even my hands.

A swedish "celeb" (he was in Whale (that "Homo humping slowmo dog" band if you can remember) has the old Sony logo on his arm. The one with an S made up of dots. Looks absolutely ridiculous.

My mate had a celtic band half way around his bicep, missing the inside. When he went for the medical when he joined the navy the doc, basically, said to him 'get that joined up all the way around unless you want to be known as a homo and get bummed all the time'.

The transfer idea is a good one, I got some transfers before on Ebay (print out your own temporary tattoos sort of thing), years ago, to try out a tattoo for a week. It definitely helps to either confirm you want it and help with placement and size decisions.

I think the popularity of tattoos is slowly overwhelming the old prejudice against them ( well, certainly if they are good art). It's your body, if you want to see it, because it has significance or you just find pleasure in its form, then put it on show if you want. People will get over it soon enough.

The dialogue that obvious tattoos may open is often positive these days, I find. Curious rather than condemning.

I caught sight of my tattoo yesterday, it still surprises me 10 years on as it's between my shoulderblades, so rarely witnessed. I often think about having a more visible one done, I've got a fairly gnarly scar on my left wrist from putting my fist through a window that I would like incorporated into something that looks less like I tried to kill myself. It looks a bit like a gecko.
