Anyway to make Safari less shit?

Hi i really want to use Safari as it is of course integrated and part of the whole package which on a whole i adore. But it is shit. I love Firefox but it keeps crashing. And Camino is lovely but a bit too basic. I find it goes to slow and it looks ugly as hell. Anyway to fix this? Can you like get skins for it or something? and is there a reason why it is slow?

Webkit which Safari is built on unfortunately just is crap. Have you tried Opera? Some people like it.

    Too lazy to link:

    webkit.org
    pimpmysafari.com

Get the latest nightly build of webkit and your safari will be so, so fast, also get plugins and the like from pimp my safari.

I wouldn't say it looks 'ugly as hell'... it's just a minimal interface. If anything, Opera for OSX has a messier frontend, even when customised.

In terms of speed, it's perfectly nippy at this end.

It's black on dark grey. Its the one part of leopard that looks horrible. And i hate having to wait even if it for like a second. I shouldn't have to.

Speed is dependent on a lot of different factors, and I still maintain that Safari looks fine.

    opera is very nice

Also, if it's the 'one part of Leopard that looks horrible', doesn't that also mean you hate Finder, Mail, iTunes; its a universal window design. Oh yeah, and even more fundamentally, the main Leopard menu bar at the top there is black on dark grey.

I really wouldn't bother messing around with third-party apps, Safari seems pretty good at the moment.

I actually really like Leopard safari...

Its actually usable as my main browser now, which it is. But Firefox 3 beta 3 is VERY good. If I wasnt entrenched in Safari i'd prolly switch.

    What dont you like?

How about you explain what's bad about Safari? Saying it's 'shit' is hardly helpful.
Nope, but I'm struggling to come up with a more apt description here myself.

I see no reason why anyone would choose to use Safari.

Pfff, Safari isn't that bad for me. But after two and a half years of using it, I'm so used to it, I can get past its flaws. The only main problem with it I have is that sometimes, a page won't load. But if that happens, I just use Firefox instead.

Safari looks nothing like the rest of OSX. It is just on the ugly side of simple which is a shame because everything else looks lovely. And it is the only thing on my system that runs slow, so i am not sure what to do.

Eh? It looks pretty much identical to Finder, here. Certainly tons better than the default Camino theme.

I don't mind Safari, but it does have a few bugs, and some stuff doesn't display properly. Also animated GIFs are really slow for some reason. I tried Camino and that's great, but it doesn't seem to work with the smooth-scrolling feature unlike Safari. And last time I tried Mac Firefox it was annoyingly buggy.

I'm keen on trying the latest nightly Safari builds, but I would have expected it to be a little buggy, what with 3.1 not being final yet.

Firefox crashing? I've used it exclusively as my browser on OSX for the last couple of years and it has never crashed on me.

Page rendering, or the app itself? Rendering is maybe slightly slower than IE on my PC, but I can't say I've ever noticed any other slowness.
  • Deleted user 24 February 2008 18:24:20
I dont know why firefox keeps crashing as i have been using it for years on windows but since moving to apple it crashes an awful lot. It is the page rendering that is piss slow. And i have no idea what i can do about it.

As a side note it's the only current browser that passes the Acid2 browser W3C compliance test.

Cannot comment on OSX but it works fine on windows.
The interface is, how do you put this politely?, hmmm a bit shit really.

I use Safari when I'm on the Uni's server but at home at weekends I use Mozilla. Unless I have the super fast connection from uni, Safari is so slow!

Get a faster internet connection. If you're able to count the seconds between a page loading in any other browser and in Safari then there's something wrong. And if it's nanoseconds you're counting, get a life.

You need to take it all the way up to the hilt. When you can't breathe properly the oxygen starvation does wonders for what you might otherwise perceive as flaws.

Bump. Ok I like safari now, have been using it for months. But why the hell am I not getting any sound from it? It is quite a recent problem. What's going on, any videos I watch have no sound yet all my other browsers are fine. Is there some setting I'v missed or something?

Does Safari fix broken weblinks? We had someone do a load of work for us who used Safari and didn't know much HTML - so for everyone else all the links were broken :D
  • Deleted user 17 August 2008 16:29:03
Nope, Safari doesn't fix links. They were probably broken in the first place :)
