I don't think that it's even that complicated. Basically all Nintendo has to do is generate a checksum of the freeloader executable and update the firmware so that it refuses to load discs that match this certain checksum.
I'm sure the wii owners will love the fact it'll take 5 minutes when you insert the disk to get all the data off it and generate that checksum before it allows them to play it
or are we just talking about the elf? because it could just be using a boot-up from an existing game in order to bypass the signiture validation, totally illegal but i can't think how else they are booting up an unsigned executable.
One thing I know from the dev kits is that the font sets are different for each console region, so even if it unloads itself from memory I can't imagine it's that hard to have the software itself check what fonts are available on that machine and deduct what region it is even if the region code has been changed. This also asks the question, how are they going to get all the japanese games to work when half the fonts are not even available on the pal machines

Registered 16 years agoYeah I was just thinking about the elf.
Oh, and you don't have to get unsigned core to run anymore. There are already tools out there to sign an image again after modifying it. The interesting part is if that would be legal or not.
You are right about the fonts though. Maybe the freeloader does offer those fonts. I have no idea if the software is allowed to write in those memory areas though. It would explain though why some of the japanese games simply don't work on PAL machines using modchips when you simply change the game's region. -

Registered 16 years agoi presume smash brothers will just use friend codes like other online wii titles - in which case i dont think it will make a difference (i hope not anyway!) -

That is completely irrelevant though. First of all because you don't need friend codes to play online vs. other people and secondly if you want to play against people you know using friend codes it could still be limited to your local region. -
on my order details on codejunkies it says its been dispatched. i never got an email though. -

Yeah I ordered 28th as well - although when they do dispatch I would hope to get it the next day considering it is getting couriered. Saying that if they don't dispatch it tomorrow I'll probably cancel and go with gamseek as well - should have Brawl by Thursday, so NEED Freeloader by then. -

I haven't ever been able to get the tracking number to work since it shipped on the 6th. Didn't receive a shipping email confirmation either. A tad worrying. -

Registered 16 years agoHow do you go about cancelling the order on the codejunkies site? -
I got my mits on a copy today and for what it's worth, doesn't seem to work very well. Feels very rushed, when you load it you're greeted with a lovely bunch of coloured bars akin to a spectrum preparing to show a title screen line by line.
The manual is one double sided sheet of paper which consists of about half a page of warnings about how "it probably won't work" when you update it, try import games on it or so much as breath on it.
Tried a few US GC games, none of which loaded. and tried No More Heros which seemed to do something, just something unfortunately didn't involve getting to the title screen.
The rest of the sheet tells you how to avoid firmware updates, by pulling the disc out and putting it back in a couple of times. So even if it does work, it looks like it's now "FREE 200% extra hassle!" over ye old Gamecube Freeloader. -

/wonders how many US copies of no more heroes are going to be returned in the next couple of weeks
also, doesnt the website say you can play ANY import game? surely thats not allowed if half of them dont work? -
I guess my NMH copy will be returned then. Gawd, so after having checked on this and some other forums, there's not ONE tale of successfully loading a US GC or WII game with the new Freeloader.
