    @Load_2.0

Iíve read a few Ali books and my impression was that Patterson was a warmly regarded champion on both sides of the racial divide. Thereís lots of great background on why the NAACP and even apparently the president didnít want Patterson to fight Liston. I think itís a simplification to say he couldnít be a popular champion just because he was black.

Equally Iím sure a lot of white southerners hated him, and Iím sure Liston would have won white fans for his sheer ability and black fans for his refusal to be a white manís stereotype of what a champion should act like.

Iíll look out for the book though. Also as an aside I think that villains list is more about people who were willing to cheat and be vicious. I might be wrong but I thought Holyfield was mostly well regarded coming right off the back of his Olympic success? Iím also pretty sure that Tyson was loved when he first boxed, only losing popularity as the court cases started and he began partying too hard. Pretty sure a 20 year old champion was the stuff of fairy tales.

    And Tyson came second.
That list seems to have a pretty diverse spread of ethnicities.
Well yeah, but all (or certainly mostly, donít know much about a couple of the older ones) minority ethnicities, which was what I said.

If you listed the top 10 most popular boxers the vast majority would be from minorities too. Its a sport dominated by minorities, hence the "great white hope" thing.

I do get that. To be honest Iím not quite sure point what Iíve made that isnít being agreed with. Admittedly the topic has meandered a bit since my original thoughts on Fury, but race/ethnicity playing a role in media sporting hero/villain narratives is fairly well established thing, even today. Raheem Sterling, Serena Williams etc etc.

I dunno, I've always just felt that a boxers popularity has always very much been based on his personality/talent and boxing has been a pretty colour blind sport for quite a long time.

Perhaps Iím just cynical but I really do believe the narrative around boxers and the ďbrandsĒ that are created around them are crafted quite deliberately and carefully by PR and media specialists.

To bring it full circle I think Fury is a brilliant example. His original persona was ďvillainĒ and yes, I think the fact that he was a Traveller (and the racism towards that group) played a part in the way he was spun. And now heís been very cleverly re-positioned with a redemption narrative.

But maybe itís all completely organic and Iím just too cynical about these things.

Tbh, the tabloid press have as much say into a boxer popularity as the fighter in question. This includes Ali, whom the press didn't take kindly to his 'Uncle Tom' comments (even though they called him a 'Black Muslim' at the time), as well as his refusal to fight in Vietnam (even though three of the last four US presidents also dodged the draft).

It didn't do any harm to Fury at all giving the entire $9 million purse to homeless charities. bit of a loss-leader there PR wise and along with his mental health advocacy his marketing machine is working very efficiently and definitely earning their money.

He pledged that money anyway, wonder if that got into the hands of the charities?

Not cynical at all. Boxing is still huge business.

edit: For the Wilder fight that is.

Quite different that to Mayweather posting pictures of beds of money or his 3 Bugatti's. Though I would guess Mayweather would have given money to charity too.

Fury giving away his Wilder fight purse is actually a point of contention; there are murmurings he didn't make good on his promise, or didn't give all the money away. There doesn't seem to be any acknowledgement from charities that they received a donation of several million from him.

I'd be amazed if it was purely organic. I get the sense his story is genuine and he's clearly quite happy to talk about it, but his team would be failing him massively if they didn't capitalise on the narrative.

Hughie Fury is fighting a large man.

    The boxing is awful.

The fact they are singing Baby Shark to get the crowd going is surreal.

    This is bizarre.

    They all look super hyped.

I guess when all you can do for entertainment is drive your car like a cunt and smoke shisha this is like popping E's at a rave.
