It's also the game Bulba was talking about, it used to be called Rainy Woods.

I think there's an old thread for it somewhere.

I was wondering where that had gone. Looks like we won't be seeing it then.

    Oh well.

    (continues waiting for Alan Wake).

The director is still writing blog entries about the game on the official site, last one was in December so I reckon its still in the works, not sure about Ignition mind after Metal Slug XX went to Atlus instead or maybe they just fell out with SNK.

It's been in development hell for years now and still looks bloody awful. I can't imagine it ever turning out to be worth anyone's time or money.

Seems weird given the capabilities of the current console generation that people seem to have lost interest in horror games just when there's finally the graphical oomph to make them superfuckingawesome.

Agreed, although I've never been that much of a graphics whore (just played through and thoroughly enjoyed Sherlock Holmes Versus Jack the Ripper) so hopefully Rainy Woods/Deadly Premonition will be decent games even if they look ugly. Strangely enough, I recently bough one of those old fashioned things called 'magazines' from a 'high-street shop' recently. It had a brief piece about Deadly Premonition in it. Didn't reveal much though, except to say that several elements of the game had to be changed as a result of fairly obvious similarities to the Twin Peaks series.

Since when did game designers have to avoid sampling films and television?!?

Bah this really is the end times for the irreverant, hobbyist aspect of game design that is a key part of their appeal and charm in the past, unless its a startup/digital/bedroom coded offering.

@blerk seems like a lot of the types of games that interest us lot on here, horror games especially have fallen by the wayside this generation...*sigh*

Is Alan Wake going to be a return to form for the horror genre this generation, or is it going to be another action-fest with a horror theme? Have people lost interest in it due to the long development time?

I'm currently playing through Dracula - The Last Sanctuary on the PlayStation 2.

Have I lost interest in Alan Wake...no fookin way. I think it will be a 50/50 split between gen Horror (scare/fears) and action. The shame of it is we who love horror games are outnumbered by people who want action games. I don't want to start the whole Resi5 debate again, but as good as it was, it was not horror. I'm thinking Siren, original Resi trilogy.Silent Hill,Fatal Frame etal.
Re Deadly prem, as someone mentioned I think it is only for local people, not for the likes of us (Brits)
  • Deleted user 19 January 2010 19:05:05
I think the problem with it lies in the fact it's hard to do an excellent, coherent horror game as opposed to a mediocre Shoot-em-up when you know for a fact the Shooter will sell more than an excellent horror game will simply because of the mentality of gamers and problems with Age Restrictions limiting your audience.

Yeah I'm sort of thinking/hoping that Alan Wake will be exploring and talking to people and stuff during the day with the fighting of monsters and stuff done at night. Of course, exploration and talking to people would be cool at night as well.

It would seem that Deadly Premonition (formerly known as Rainy Woods) is now on sale in the US. The details actually make it sound quite good.

    http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/22160/Deadly-Premonition-Arrives-At-Retail/

I wonder if it will make it to the UK? The IGN review is... not encouraging...

    http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/107/1070909p1.html

Perhaps it is coming to the UK, if that's the IGN UK review... I wonder whether the developers of this game were hoping to cash in on Alan Wake. If it comes to the UK, I might pick it up anyway - I'm a bit of a sucker for old-school survival horror.

There is a trailer up on Giantbomb and it looks utterly hilariously shit.

Have you looked at the gameplay footage within the IGN review? There are two videos, one should play after the other. The first one shows driving - and driving - and driving - and driving - and you get the picture. The second one shows combat, and it does look sort of creepy...
  • Deleted user 24 February 2010 01:42:16
In the combat video, the basics look ok, movement aiming etc, but the combat looks poor, and the driving stuff seems far too ambitious for a small budget game. Needed someone to look at the books and say, cut that out and focus on trying to nail the essentials.

Know people are going to have fun taking the piss out of this, but its a shame as the director comes across well in the blog, and from the most recent entry of his blog (official site, I posted the link near the top of this page) it has some cool ideas.

The game is based around the clock, and the cast move around going about their business (you see two people in the car they drive past) and you can plan your day to meet up with people, talking about the case over lunch.

The director also recommends you go around stalking people and peeking through windows, that and growing beards and attracting flies gives it a darkly humourous Irem SOS The Final Escape vibe.

Hope they don't go under and can work on another game, ditch the combat and open world, and design a modest 3D adventure type game (horror or otherwise) with quirky humour, oh and put it on both 360 and PS3.

My god, it looks absolutely abysmal in those videos.
  • Deleted user 24 February 2010 02:58:31
And the audio has to be the worst I've ever heard in a game. Terrible.

Here are a couple more gameplay videos of Deadly Premonition. I thought it would be fun to inflict these upon you. They show the early parts of the game, so obviously, they're rather spoiler-y. I know nine links are rather a lot, but I thought some of the videos showed some quite interesting stuff - and I think I'm going to stick my neck out here and assume most people here won't buy the game - even if it does reach the UK.

    Anyway - enjoy.

    Just thought I'd add this...

    http://helldescent.com/2010/03/10/deadly-premonition-review/

...since we've been talking about Deadly Premonition.

Though I suppose the review is a bit biased since it is a site for horror games.

    That looked really good! I suppose it's a PC-only game. :-(

I wish more games like this would appear on consoles - or possibly Mac.

The nearest I've got to anything really like that is Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth.

See, i'd give an arm and a leg for a game pack from the guys at Frictional games , you know , just like the orange box for example...

    Penumbra+ Penumbra2 on X360/PS3 would be really cool i think :)

Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi all the way. A survival horror, feels much like those old first person shooters (I mean Heretic old).

I've got Dracula, Dracula 2 and Necronomicon for PSone. I wish there was more stuff of that ilk on modern consoles. I recently enjoyed Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Rippet on my Xbox 360, so it's not as if these slower games can't be done.

But that footage of Amnesia looked great. It's quite frustrating that conoles are more or less ignored for these great-looking horror titles.

The Penumbra games have a pretty unique control scheme where holding down a key on the keyboard lets you freely move the cursor about the screen and interact with objects, pulling over shelves, opening drawers stuff like that.

I just don't think theres anyway to retcon the games into working with a controller and a large part of the series is its manipulation under pressure, it would just vanish.
