Registered 14 years agoOh wow, that plane boss in CVX. Okay, I've been unloading everything onto him and he still won't even stagger. What am I doing wrong?

Registered 14 years agoOh okay, yeah, I'm an idiot. But I'm gonna blame the game too, because in the previous encounter it makes you think the boss can be staggered, so I thought I had to keep attacking it until it staggered and the crate could hit it safely.
Turns out I just had to use the crate after doing... enough damage. Very intuitive.
PS. since I had no idea how much damage was "enough", I ended up using all my exposive arrows. I bet I'm gonna regret it later.

Registered 16 years agoAcid grenade rounds if you have them, are probably best to unload on that form of the tyrant.
They are always worth keeping since acid rounds seem to be the weakness of certain annoying bosses in both Veronica and RE:3. -

Registered 14 years agoGot past the boss already, and now I'm in an underground base and there are poisonous moths and I hate it already.
Not sure how long this game is though, feels like I had to do a lot of legwork just to get to that first boss. Would be easier if there were more item boxes.

Registered 16 years agoI don't think there are fewer item boxes then usual in Code Veronica it's more how the areas are interconnected and structured.
With the first two games being built around a mansion and then a police station they both were natural hubs that enabled players to access various locations such as save rooms and item boxes more easily.
Code Veronica is a bit more sprawling so I had to periodically empty my inventory when setting out to new area, there's nothing more annoying than having to backtrack because you can't pick something up so I'd rather head out with a practically empty inventory and count on picking what you need along the way.
It's actually more efficient that way, what's the worst that can happen? You die and have to reload, backtracking to an item box and then going back again could take twice as long.

Tbf I'm almost ready to bin it though, this Antarctica base is pretty annoying and the respawning moths can do one. -

All this talk made me fire up the PS2 version on the PS4. As soon as I encountered the annoying as fuck cutscene where Clare is stumbling on the floor, I kept saying out loud, for fucks sake, just stand up.
Then later on the respawning zombies can do one.
I doubt I'll go back to it. It's the setting. It's too clinical. I need a haunted house to do this, not some crappy lab complex.
It's like early uncharted or tomb raider. You're happily enjoying the environment and the spooky tombs etc and then here come the morons with all the guns to ruin it all.
Doesn't work very well for me I'm afraid -

Registered 14 years agoI'm trying to remember... was there any psychological horror game before Silent Hill 2?
All I can think of is mystery horror like Uninvited, then monster-based stuff like Alone in the Dark and its clones, then anything inspired by Resident Evil. -

Registered 11 years agoWell, there's the totally random stuff like The Legacy on the pc, or the fatal frame series. Although that's mostly jump scares / creepiness to be honest.
There were a few strange ones on the Amiga too. Something like Dark Seed, alternative dimension hopping buffoonery between the normal world and hr gigers.
Also, eternal darkness: sanity's requiem on the GameCube but that's later I think -

Registered 14 years agoNone of those games blurred the line between reality and the protagonist's mind though. Maybe Eternal Darkness, but it was more of a gameplay feature rather than a plot point (the plot itself was basic Lovecraftian stuff).
The only one that comes to my mind is Weird Dreams, and in that case there was no doubt it was all a dream.

Registered 16 years agoResident Evil is one of my most beloved series, but I'm finally playing through the remaster of Resident Evil 0 and have had more anger-inducing moments than any other game in the series. And I've been playing them since the PS1 days.
The design is so punishing and oftentimes blatantly unfair. Certain design decisions make me wonder if it was ever playtested. And oh, how I miss the item box. I've just left the training facility section (barely scraped through) and I've left the floor littered with piles of items I just can't take with me. Inventory management feels like such a chore in this game.
On a positive note, some of the puzzles are fun and the pre-rendered backgrounds are lovely. -

Well dark seed did exactly that on the Amiga but it wasn't done fantastically well.

Yeah weird dreams was all just a dream iirc.
Funny about eternal darkness. I'm just sitting here working out how to set it up as I fancy a go
