I'm about to get myself Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns from Play.com. I feel slightly ashamed to have never read them. Apart from The Preacher (which gripped me but is too long and therefore too expensive to pursue really, apart from the fact that I've read the first 5 but I bought them for my bro so I don't actually own them) what else would you recommend, and why? |
Graphic Novel recommendations please

Maus by Art Spiegelman. Possibly one of the most moving works of any description, and a really important story which should be told and re-told. -
Watchmen and DKR are basically the best places to start. They're the first two I got as well.
I can recommend The Long Halloween (Batman), The Killing Joke (Batman again, although it's a bit hard to find. I had to buy it off eBay), and Marvel Civil War stuff.
Thing about Civil War is that there's SO much of it, so try not to get too sucked in. Perhaps just the main book, The Road To Civil War, and a couple of choices of characters that you like are enough for that.
However, despite the quality of DKR, I can heartily NOT recommend DKR Strikes Again. Utter shite in every department.
There's a Graphic Novels group too, so join that as well. -
I think I've already read The Killing Joke. I might even have a copy in a plastic cover in my mum's loft somewhere. Or maybe not.
Wasn't a fan of Sin City the movie, really (beautifully made but fucking boring story once you strip away the visual candy), and while I'm aware that movies of graphic novels kill all the stuff that made the source material great, I'm just not that bothered about the residents of Sin City...
Sorry. I know I'm missing out on great stuff, but the damage has been done. -

Registered 15 years agoI've got a bit of a soft spot for Clive Barker's The Yattering and Jack. It's an excellent short story too. -
Hmm, I'm gonna go for those original two for now, then... They should keep me busy for a while -

Author? Too many books with Marvel in the title on Play.com (and yeah I typed in Marvels!).

Right, Watchmen, DKR and Complete Maus ordered.
Cheers folks. -
I wouldn't call it minimalist, but a Google image search should help you decide. -

Quite basic, but I read a few panels and was drawn in immediately.

Deleted my post above asking about the artwork before you replied, because I decided it was irrelevant if the story and writing was as good as you say. -

Yeah its a good unThere are a couple of other books in that range I quite rate.
Apart from the ones mentioned (Watchmen, Dark Knight, Long Halloween) I'd definitely add Kingdom Come, Superman Red Son and the Marvels counterpart called Ruins.
Oh and Marvel Zombies -
Goddammit, went and added Marvels to my order. £43 worth of graphic novel goodness winging my way thanks to you lot. -

I'd never heard of that, but I have a friend who will go crazy for it. -

Registered 19 years agoSandman. Leaf through some stuff about it, and if the concept grabs you (or if you've ever liked anything Gaiman has written), rejoice in the fact that it's available in huge collected volumes - first two are out now (of four, I believe), at 45 quid a throw. They're gorgeous and well worth the money.
And if you liked Preacher, I suspect that you'll love Transmetropolitan. It's filthy and offensive and hilarious and brilliant in equal measure. -

Registered 15 years agoI read a beautiful graphic novel the other day that was amazingly moving but I'm buggered if I can remember what it was called.
It's basically about how different societies can look completely alien to immigrants. A man leaves his family and journeys across the sea to an America-type place and everything is very fantastical, with big strange animals and gadgets that could be straight out of a Ghibli film. It's wordless and very good.
Found it! It's The Arrival by Shaun Tan. Think I might buy it myself tomorrow. -
Sounds interesting.
Hey, what was that one about a hero based on a Roman legend - Gremmel, or something? A mate of mine was well into it, but I couldn't quite understand the story as he explained it.
Grendel? -
