Well I did say it only seems easier! I'm not saying it's shit or anything... I want to play it over the guitar anyway haha. It's just easier for my hands is what I meant.

Anyway, any bass-specific sites and whatnot? Or are the guitar ones listed here fine for that too?

Yeah it seems more like an instrument that's easy to learn but difficult to master. Simple enough to kind of plod along with, but can be intricate and fiddly if you want it to be.

The stuff I'd be playing wouldn't exactly be complex anyway!

I have got my Noad book and Guitarists Way ones. I had a 20 minute play yesterday and had forgot nearly all the notes on the stave.
I just need to dedicate at least 30 mins a day, no easy feat with work and 2 very small young children, but even so.

Although I don't suffer so much for spare time (no kids) I find grabbing my guitar for five minutes here and there and just practising basic scales or licks (gawd I hate that word) - say when I'm cooking my dinner or I'm waiting for a show to come on the TV - is a great way to sneak in additional playing time.

It's also one of the reasons I love my Telecaster so much - it's so robust that I can just leave it lying around the flat so it's always readily to hand, which I wouldn't dare do with my ES335.

So, nobody has any bass-specific websites? Can I use the websites already in this thread for bass?

I can't really check at the moment, I'm supposed to be working! EG can easily be concealed though, muahaha.

Sorry. I have no need of such sites as I am God of the bass already ;)

How do you become the God of Bass then? :p

People often have awful advice that just doesn't work for me, like "just play along to easy songs". Uhh, yeah, ok... how!?!?

    GAH!

Mainly by playing with other musicians. Whoever and whenever. The higher quality, the better. You learn so much from playing with great musicians.

I have some friends who are great musicians but they won't exactly be free for that kind of thing as they're busy with their bands - practicing, touring and whatnot. I am hoping to play the bass for one friend of mine, but I'm going to have to learn a bit more about it on my own as I'll only really be popping round to see him once a week, if that at the moment.

It's really tough with the bass as it's not exactly top fun to play as a solo instrument unless you can get hold of an acoustic bass or are prepared to start investigating some of the more advanced techniques.

Hmm... I don't mind to be honest. I've never played an instrument at all so it's all completely new to me. Even if it's really repetitive and whatnot on your own, I don't care. I like repetition anyway.

Plus, if I can manage to bang out a tune or two I'll investigate playing bass for my friend a bit further.

Here is a online site with bass lassons.
I have no idea if they are any good, but the place looks decent enough.

    filth!

im learning the bass as well, mate at work had one going and he gave me bass plus amp for £30, which wasnt fucking bad! i'm loving it! i think its as with all things, you just have to practice and practice and practice, but i'll give you the benefit of my very very limited experience.

the way ive done it is playing along with tabs found on the internet. now, i have no idea what your taste in music is so i'll just list a few songs that really helped me along:
we are scientists - its a hit first tab i ever learned, awesome record, dead easy
feeder - buck rogers quite possibly the easiest tab ever
maximo park - books from boxes again, incredibly easy but very satisfying to play
arcade fire - no cars go slightly trickier, but you can learn the main body of the song then work on the tricky bits. ive also found this useful for trying to figure out some of the notes myself because i dont think its wholly acurate at the end.
bloc party - helicopter fantastic wee riff to play along with but again its slightly tricky, especially with the timing.
cold war kids - saint john i love playing this, can play it on its own as well and its still good.
these are obviously all songs that i like, but that website has millions and millions of tabs for songs that you'll maybe want to play along with yourself. once you get more confident you can tackle tricker tabs, and you can also piss about with the tabs you learned.

the other thing i learned slowly was that notes you play on your bass can correspond to the chords that the main guitar is playing. this is a table of notes you can play on your bass, so for example if youre playing along with a guitarist who is happily strumming away on a c chord, you could be tapping on the second string down with your index finger depressing the third fret. this is also a good way of figuring out which notes you should be playing if you cant find the bass tab on that ultimate guitar website but you can find the guitar chords.

the other good thing about that note table is that if you look closely (and this is true of the guitar as well), you see that the fifth fret in is the same note as the next string down. so look at that cold war kids - saint john tab again; during the chorus you can either play the seventh fret in on the third string down, OR you can play the second fret in on the fourth string down (the bottom one), whichever you find easier. took me a while to figure that one out!

the only other thing id say to you is that you can finger your bass, but i find it easier to play with a (thick) plectrum. but thats something you'll figure out on your own! i finger saint john (shut it...) but use a plectrum on most other songs.

hope all this helps, if it doesnt then just ask me, but i havent been playing long either and im not great shakes! have fun!

Ah great, thanks for all the help! Loads of good advice there. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to these things. Once I sort my dodgy net connection out at home I'll be in business.

Well mostly punk rock so nothing too taxing! I'm not going to be banging out any Dream Theater or anything.

Would want to do some deep reggae bass at a later date as well, but to be honest I just need to pick up the basics first so any help/songs to play is appreciated!

I like lots of music generally though. Punk rock, rock & roll, reggae, dub, electro, some folk... old Jewish stuff with accordions :D

ALL YOUR CHORDS ARE BELONG TO ME!

Yup I can now play all open chords! I just need to learn how to switch between them fast which I guess will come with practice!

    Love this shit!

IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE I CAN FIND AN INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO ON HOW TO PLAY The Wind Cries Mary OR Castles Made of Sand I WILL BE GRATEFUL for about five minutes, after which I'll be too busy struggling and cursing at my guitar to remember you.
    Sincerely,
    Cordially,
    With thanks,

Quick google on "Wind Cries Mary guitar" brings up more links than I care to click on.

    Here's two random ones. [link=http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EmZpZ9CiVFg">One.

Thanks. I know how to play Wind Cries Mary now, albeit with few of the subtleties that Hendrix puts into it, obviously.
Now onto Castles Made of Sand...

If you're just starting, you must have patience and you must not have cunty friends who tell you to 'shut the fuck up you sound nothin like slash!' after 1 hour.
The 1st Month is the hardest, your fingers are as useful as Michael J fox on acid with jelly hands, but if you keep at it, it slowly clicks!
The 1st song i learned was Knockin on heavens door, there are only 4 chords all the way through, quite easy ones (G5, D, C and Am) but when you perfect the hand movements you can play over the song (tuned to Em) and you feel awesome!!
Ive been playing for about 13 years now, but had a 6 year break in the middle, due to aforementioned 'friends'
Now I play about 2 hours every night and I love it EVEN MORE THAN GAMES!!!

    Keep practisin mate.

Erm accoustic probably- toughens your fingers up and when you switch to electric it feels so much easier!! Unless you just wanna thrash the fuck out of it, then its leccy all the way!

Just thumb? I had my entire forearm and wrist fucked the other day.

I was leaning into my bass so I'd been pressing into arm until it ached. :)

Thing with bass-pain is you get used to it. Keep fighting, play faster :D
