So, I'm playing COD4 and suddenly the sound stops halfway through a game. I thought the TV was playing up originally, but when the game ended the picture turned blank and i had to switch my PS3 on and off. I then thought the HDMI connection was funny because the picture was fuzzy and unclear so I tried taking it out of the TV and console a few times, and then the console started working properly. I had COD4 in the system, but for some reason the icon didn't come up, so i ejected the disk and put it back in. The icon then appeared, but when I clicked it, it came up with an error and I presume it can't read disks as I've tried numerous times and it does everything else fine. I don't want to go trying to get the lens, I know you probably can fix it yourself, but I'm going to use the warranty. What I do want to know is, as i have a 60GB, will I get the same console back fixed, a brand new 60GB, or a 40GB and a few games? I really won't accept a 40GB but I bought it at Argos. Should I bring it back there or phone Sony? Thanks. |

Registered 15 years agoI would have thought Sony would be the best option - They should be able to fix your 60gb machine whereas I doubt the shop would have any to replace it with.
IMO, of course. -

Registered 12 years agoHeh, I feel for ya. My 40GB drive died a couple of weeks ago, exact same problem. just after a CoD sesh. Remember to delete/backup/format the HD before you send it off, if there's anything you don't want Sony to know about
Just to warn you, a full format took 2 1/2 hours for mine.
And what is it with CoD4 ? Slowing the internets, forcing ISPs to block it, destroying Blu Ray drives........
WHEN WILL THE MADNESS STOP ?! -

Registered 11 years agoErm well I tried it again today and it was fine for a while but after one online game of COD4, the same thing happened, screen went blank, couldn't read disk.
I haven't properly tried any of the game but Ratchet and Clank go onto the main menu fine. -

Nah, probably not but it sounds kinda cool. -

Registered 12 years agoGoogle "Blu Ray Drive Failure", and you'll find it's more common than you think. I'd assumed it's been kept pretty quiet as the failure rate is nowhere near RROD proportions. Something to watch for in the future perhaps ? -
A mate's PS3 showed similar symptoms (stopped reading ALL discs actually) a few weeks ago. His shop send it back to Sony, they didn't know if they would replace the drive or get him a new machine. -

Registered 12 years agoNot unusual for any of the consoles to get drive failures. It's the most likely point of failure by far. -

Registered 11 years agoIt's a strange one this, I tried COD4 single player today and the sound suddenly stopped after I died. The when I quit and saved the whole thing went blank again.
I think the PS3 is having problems saving data tbh. -
Backup your saves and send it away on warranty! No need having a faulty machine around, the sooner you get rid of it the better.
Psychotext, indeed: the same happened with earliest PS2s, until they got the mechanics of the moving laser parts right. The PS3 is probably trickier for having a slot loading system and a new type of optical drive. -

Registered 11 years agoMine stopped reading everything as well, it's down to luck if you get it under warranty as it's a day over, they check the date you bought the system. -

Registered 11 years agoDon't know if this will help, but it worked for me.
Mine was 3 months old (60gb) when it started locking up playing blu-rays. Everything else (games, dvd etc) were ok. But Movies would randomly freeze, necessitating a hard power-off. This was on every one of 6 different discs, and at random times.
I spoke to Sony and they recommended the first step was to select "restore default settings" from the system menu. I was skeptical, but tried it, after backing up essential stuff (saves etc) to a memory stick.
That was around a month ago and since then (fingers crossed) it's been ok.
Has to be worth a try. -

Registered 12 years agoOddly enough I've seen quite a few of these threads pop up in the last couple of weeks. I wonder if a firmware update did something.
That, or people are finally playing some games on the thing.

Registered 11 years agoThis happened to mine over the weekend although it did not happen whilst it was playing a disk I just switched it on and no disks are showing in the menu.
Mine is a launch model so had this happened in a months time I would have been screwed. I wonder how long I will be without the PS3?
And there was me waiting for my 360 to die! -

Registered 11 years agoAnother thing do you defineately get a refurb? I am not sure I am happy with that. My PS3 has had very light use indeed so no doubt I'll get one back that has been used a lot more and will be stuck with it when my warranty runs out. -

Registered 11 years agohey guys... i just had the same problem...
my 60 gig stopped reading blu rays.. altho it would still read dvds...whan i called sony they said it would coos £130 to sort it out ( after a system format which didnt work).
so out of warrenty i decided to take it apart myself to clean lense, and noticed that the lead which connects to the laser had come loose... so i cleaned laser and greased up the gears, checked the connections to other leads..... and for the moment its working again..
ill just keep my fingers crossed... but i hope that this will work for someone else who is having problems. -

Registered 11 years agoI just had the same thing happen. I was playing my new Sims 3 PS3 game, when it just froze. So i quit out of the game, took out the disc, and restarted the system. And now, it won't play any game at all. It shows the loading icon at the top corner, but nothing comes up. I did all the stuff recommended here - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090309111828AAhIZ1v - but still nothing. -
