Orange Uk and data bundles

Blimey. I am the worlds worst for opening bills but my most recent one from orange sure got my attention when it came in at £138 (2 phones). Closer scrutiny showed that I had been charged £55 just for data which was split £43 orange wap and £12 Orange Internet. I have a 30mb data bundle so was a little shocked to see this.

I range them up and asked about the possibility of a larger data bundle to which he said that I would have to go up to a £45 a month tariff (per phone) to get a larger bundle and could not explain why I had been charged for 2 different data types.

Feeling a bit ripped off right now especially as both o2 and T-Mobile offer plans with unlimited data for less than £30 per month. It would appear on the surface that Orange are not interested in the data market.

Any tips on what Orange can/cannot offer if I were to push the right buttons? I'd rather not go through the hassle of leaving and porting my number over etc but with these figures at the moment I'd be pretty stupid not to!

Funny thing is I just got a shiny new HTC TYTN-II as my last one had an unfortuneate accident and Orange were really great in replacing it for free, no wonder considering how much they fleece me for!

30mb just does not cut it really.

Wow I am in shock, I just got off the phone with orange and they must be losing customers left right and centre!

I went through a number of departments and they said that there is only 1 larger bundle than 30mb and that is 80mb and costs £40 extra per month.

I cannot see any other option but to move to 02 or tmobile who both offer plans with unlimited data for less than £30 per month. I'd really rather not move but at those prices it seems a no brainer.

Maybe they'd do a better job of attracting customers if they didn't further confuse the already-baffling matter of mobile phone packages by giving them animal name.

I'll have....erm....Raccoon please. Hang on, does a raccoon text a lot? no, can't, no thumbs. Ok, a dolphin as I like to do a lot of clicking and squeaking.

It's the single most ridiculous marketing decision that I can remember. Well, since that Post Office rebrand anyway.

I've been on Orange for years but rarely use their data services because of all this bollocks... I was always confused how so many people have MSN on their phones yet don't get raped for their money - turns out they're on O2 :p

I almost prolapsed when i read about Orange's data offerings, the cap is so low it's almost farcical and the cost is a joke. I hope they sort something out soon or i'll be moving to another provider next time i'm due an upgrade.

The plot thickens. I rang back up and spoke to somebody else and there is a 250mb per month option which is only available with a couple of their panther packages.

So sorted for the short-term £40 a month including 900 mins and 400 texts and 250mb of data per month.

Come July though I'll have to move to o2 or Tmobile though as they are both coming in at less than £30 for a similar package but with unlimited data.

girlfriend is on orange. dolphin £35 and its unlimited texts and 600 xnet minutes.

    i'm on 3 and i can send 50 300k mms a month. i just sent her a vid and a photo.

this then prompted her to ask me to have a look what her mms message allowance is and i can't for the life of me find it. looked all over the site and on other sites and i'm fed up.

from the looks of it, they charge you per mms even though you can send as many texts as you like. is this right?

I think so. It is amazing how orange have become so uncompetitive in pretty much every area.

Unless they can magic me a custom tarrif come upgrade time I will be moving probably to o2.

That's not 100% true, they do have the biggest range of Pink and Purple handsets of any Network... Most of them Exclusive to Orange.

I believe that at some point Orange made a decision to pursue the "female demographic" and leave O2 to fight for the data heavy geek demographic. Or at least that what it looks like from the outside.

Me too, I've stuck with them because i've never had any issues with them and their coverage has been excellent for the areas i travel around but i will be shopping around next-time if they haven't sorted out data pricing to my liking.

It's not just data pricing though. The missus was on some daft tariff - £20 for 75 mins and 75 texts. O2 have offered 200 mins and 400 texts for £15, no contract. No contest really.

I've just moved from Orange to O2 for this reason. I'm on their sim only tariff which is a 30 day contract with 200 minutes and 400 texts for £15 a month and have then added their unlimited data bundle (with allows GPRS, EDGE and 3G access) for £7.50 per month. £22.50 per month with unlimited data, switch now!!

Is it better to wait until my next update and contract is due in about 8 months or if i switch mid-contract i presume they'll shaft me and make me pay lots to move?

With T-mobile an 02 your MMS sent comes out of your SMS allowance. 1 MMS = 4 SMS.

I have 3 months left so will let my contract run. Being on Panther 45 means I am £12 a month worse off vs o2 or t mobile so not worth paying an early cancellation over.

Well, that depends on whether you get anymore £100+ bills for using data ;)

I've got a feeling I'm going to switch too then when my contract is up. I've been with them for about 5 or 6 years now.

The only decent thing I've got with 'em is the unlimited evening + weekend calls thing they do.

The panther comes with 250mb of data so that should be ok now.

I only use it for email.

    Thanks

It will be interesting to see if Orange can budge on the tarrif when my contract comes up or whether they will call my bluff.

I don't want to move but ultimately I'll have to.

This always confuses me. Why don't you want to move? Do you have some loyalty to orange beyond that which comes as part of a contractual relationship?

Genuinely curious here by the way, if I didn't get all my mobile needs paid for by work I'd go for the cheapest option with the phone / deal I wanted

It's just the hassle with the whole porting over of your number really. Also other than the odd snag here and there I have found Orange's coverage pretty good which is more than can be said for my last provider (Tmobile)
