Sat through the first series when it was shown again on BBC1. It has its charms but the writers seem totally baffled at the idea of writing plot resolution. e.g. Gavin finding out about Stacey's prior engagements - ends the episode, "Don't talk about it" the only reference in the next.

Not bothered with the second series.

Weird series innit. The two main characters are completely overshadowed and upstaged by all the peripheral characters in the show, particularly Rob Brydon (fucking excellent), Nessa, Smithy and Gavin's mum (played by Alison Steadman).

2nd series has been a bit pissy and weak so far but it might get better.

Isn't it is written by Nessa and Smithy (sorry - can't remember the actor's names)? Which would explain why it is really about them!

Yeah it is - I reckon they'd have done better to just kill G & S off at the end of the first series and make the show all about the peripheral characters properly.

So hands up then, who's going to admit that they'd give Nessa a nibble of their corn on the cob? Assuming that there were no loo brushes anywhere in the vicinity...

Hey it's my first day back on EG proper, I had to at least make sure that my posts remained at gutter level as usual.

(IRL Ruth Jones isn't too bad and polishes up very well indeed)

But the show couldn't possibly work without them. Everything revolves around their families treat them. The fact that they are overshadowed and upstaged by the other characters is the fundamental angle the series is based on as far as I can tell so far.

Aye I guess so. They're just such annoying characters. It's weird, you spend any time watching the show just wanting to skip past any bits that feature them solely so you get to see more of the extra characters.

Uncle Brin (Rob Brydon) is the star though, completely steals every bloody scene and every episode and so far in the 2nd series they've obviously realised this and have given him some of the series' best moments (the "home gym" bit was funny)

It's ok, nothing special. Plus Gavin's face is really bloody irritating to look at. The fat guy is mildly amusing.

These are the words of Lukus. Peace be with you.

i agree but its entertaining enough telly, its got a good mix of drama unt comedy.

matthew horne is pretty annoying to look at, i just simply dont understand why he thinks buttoned up shirts with no tie is a good thing, it looks fucking shit. james cordon is entertaining enough but i wish he would portray the intelligence he obviously has a bit more.

joanna page is fucking lush tho

I keep trying this (watching it on BBC Three as I type), but I really struggle.

I mean, it's no Fonejacker or Little Miss Jocelyn in the 'shit' category, but it's nowt special to me. Maybe I should buy the first series and watch em all.

    /felt this way about Spaced

i hope to fuck you got into spaced in the end pes!

anyhoo, i agree with blize, i think this programs strength lies in its characterisations and the many in-jokes littered about the episodes (omlettes!)

and you just simply cant beat rob brydon.

Have watched em all as the misses had them on Series Link. Much preferred the 1st series to the 2nd and Brin steals the show most of the time.

Just finished catching up from the repeats on BBC3. It really is one of the funniest series I have ever watched. Spaced is the only other Britcom that immediately comes to mind in the same league.

    Bump.

    So. This is pretty terrible.

Got to say, I don't quite see what the fuss is about. Isn't it just a romantic sitcom?

I'm prepared to be persuaded but what is it that's so funny about it?
  • Deleted user 25 December 2008 21:37:55
What very little I've seen did make me laugh. It just seems quite understated and normal while at the same time quite farcical in a very 'real' way, which is usually what makes me laugh.

Having avoided it the first time round I caught it back to back on dvd last year and absolutely loved it. So utterly charming, the writing is fantastic.

Anyway, series 3 starts tonight on BBC1 and HD.

    WIN.

Don't get this. Like a lot of the people involved but together it just doesn't work for me. Do you have to be a borderline simpleton to find it funny or is it completely the other way?

Had a very similar experience with the Royle Family. Would say that is the nearest comparator.

    It's definitely the other way.

It's just as Owen said, the understated nature of the comedy works so well for me. I am a bit worried that they might try to up the ante in series three and break it though.

I didn't get what the fuss was about either until I gave it a go from the beginning, but was hooked after watching 2 of them back to back.
