Been working in the shithole that is North Acton for a few months now and had no idea there was an arcade there. It looks like it's only a shortish walk from my office too, will have to pay it a visit. Mind you I'm probably pushing my luck as I haven't been mugged or stabbed once yet. |

Registered 16 years agoHmm this thread will do... So I'm going to London for a day in May with the g/f. Travelling from Manchester Piccadilly.
I've never been and there are so many stations and I'm wondering what people would recommend. So far I'm looking at saint pancras or Euston station which is coming out best on price. I guess it depends on what we want to do but thought I'd get some opinions from people who have been/live in the city.

What, places to stay? Or eat? Or bondage dungeons? -
@Nitrous
Pretty sure you'll only be able to get to Euston from Manchester, unless you want to piss about changing trains and adding time to your journey... -

I was in London for a few days last week and enjoyed it. If you're only going for a day (and not staying a night) then I recommend you go to Leicester Square station after you arrive. Within a few short steps, there is The National Gallery, Trafalgar square, shopping in Covent Gardens and a variety of different restaurants. -

Registered 16 years agoThanks for the replies, well apart from PES... bondage dungeons?? Tell Quaddy he'd love it!
I went with Euston in the end, direct for £120 via Quidco and trainline. Could have gone cheaper but it would have been a much later trip on the return. Arrive at around 8am and leave at 8pm.
Now to decide/plan on what to do. -

Registered 15 years agoDepends on what you like doing. There's so much worth doing but depends what you're into. Londonist is a good thing to keep an eye on for stiff to do. Have a look, especially, closer to the time your going. So what are you into? Sights? Parks and relaxing areas? Night life? Museums? Attractions?

Registered 14 years agoSome American friends of mine are coming over to London for a week in Decemeber, and as the only English person they know... they have asked me for some travel tips. Which is probably a bad move as I'm not exactly a huge fan of London and have never really done the whole 'tourist' thing while down there.
Anyway, quick question that hopefully someone else can offer a little advice on. Is the London Travel Pass worth the price for a 6 day ticket (£242 for two adults) or is the whole thing a bit of a tourist money trap?
Any better alternatives anyone can suggest? -

Registered 14 years agoApparently their package deal to get over here includes a 7 day Oyster card for Zones 1-6 so it's literally just the London Pass they are looking to buy for the expensive visitor stuff like Tower of London ect. and the hop on - hop off bus. -
Bus tours, fuck me what a rip-off -

Registered 20 years agoApart from the Tower and Buck Palace, what do you have to pay for that is worth seeing?
Aren't all those wonderful world class museums free... Plus the lovely parks, shopping experiences, top notch boozers..?
You could recommend that they go on a couple of guided walks e.g londonwalks.com I've done a couple and thought they were ace.
If they already have their Oyster Cards covered then they can fill a week without having to buy that pass imo. -
I hear that Cereal Killer place in that there London is quite the hot ticket these days. -

Hah, I'm getting in there because they've been blubbing about being targeted unfairly. They might have a point but unfortunately they make that point whilst in their shop, in a bed with Ninja Turtles bedspread, eating a £6 bowl of cereal through their beards. -

Registered 18 years agoIf they have a 7 day 1-6 oyster they don't need anything else!
One open top bus tour, don't bother booking just show up on a nice day. The ones that leave from near St Paul seem reasonable.
All the museums are together so maybe the Natural History and the V&A. That is most of a day.
Walk down embankment and along the Thames. Plenty of pubs and places to eat.
Take a boat from Richmond to Greenwich (might be too chilly in Dec) both nice spots. The Gypsy Moth is a good place for a tourist pint, plus there is shit to look at in Greenwich.
Winter wonderland Hyde Park, a stroll through the city, Bond Street, some window shopping in Selfridges and Harrods.
I would point them at Time Out events in December as there are tonnes of things on and bound to be a few that grab their interest. -

Registered 15 years agoI read trip advisor forums for London quite a bit and the concensus is definitely that it isn't worth the money. You need to pack such a ridiculous amount of stuff in a short time to make it ant where mere with it. I wouldn't bother.
Personally my tips would be
1: Make at least 1 day trip outside London. There's cool stuff inside London that doesn't seem like London. For example Ham House in Richmond is a lovely 16th century house with formal gardens. It's zone 6 on a London travel card. There are loads of great places further out mansions and historic houses that are an hour or two from London. Or you could visit a nice market town. Get a feel for what England/Britain is really like because London is vastly different in its feel.
2: Make use of 2 for 1 deals if you have a London travel card then you can get into a lot of attractions and some restraunts a lot cheaper and only pay the price of one entrance fee.
3: Be sure to get off the beaten tracks. Sure Do the main tourist stuff but lesser known places can often be better. Greenwich for example is great. You have the painted Hall, market, cutty sark ship. Greenwich Park, royal observatory, and Maritime museum which is fantastic and free.
4) London is pretty expensive but never underestimate things you can do for free or very little. There's loads of great stuff. Check out londonist for what's going on in any given week. Often there will be lots of free stuff. A walk along the Thames is always nice but you can get a river cruise to woolwich or all the way to Hampton court in the other direction. It's pretty cheap and a great way to see London and later if you are going all they way to Hampton Court then to see British countryside.
5: If you like art and museums then they are in for a treat. London museums are amazing and you can spend an entire day in each. The British museum, London museum, docklands museum, v&a, science museum and natural history museum are ask great and there are loads of excellent smaller museums. The same for art galleries there are loads and many are free. The national gallery and the tate are two personal favourites.
6: avoid the shitty tourist crap that's just not with seeing. Don't bother with Oxford Street or picadilly circus. Ripley belive it or not, trocadero centre are also shit. Avoid tourist restraunts like Angus steak house. There are great choices for food and drink in London and it pays to do a bit of research as to what is good.
7: don't leave without doing a traditional Sunday Lunch. There are loads of pubs and some restraunts. Here is a list for traditional Sunday lunches
Any questions then feel free to ask here or pm me. -

Interestingly, according to the Wiki entry on Hipsters, one of the hobbies associated with it is taxidermy.
I have to be honest: I didn't see that coming.
