I can't think where to search to find the opposite of something. Can anyone help me out? Rutty reckons it's 'prospective' but I don't think you can do something 'prospectively' the way you can do something 'retrospectively'.

Sorry, I know this thread is stupid but it's really annoying me.

You can't do something retrospectively either. It's 'retroactively'. Retrospective is about taking a look at the past, not acting.

The opposite of retroactive would be preemptive, though, not proactive.

Gremmi, you are fab. I wish I'd known about this website years ago.

Thanks for all the replies :-)

Ever heard anyone say "prospective"? That's because it's a linguistic ghost. The real answer is much more like "prediction".

    As a reversion of retrospective?

Edit: suddenly realises he's missing a point. Prospective is obviously a correct word, but it doesn't directly form an antonym to the modern usage of retrospective.

Yeah. It's commonly used in medical terminology regarding a patient's past history, and the expected course of treatment is known as prospective treatment.

Oh yeah! As someone who deals with Simplified Prospectuses every single day I perhaps should have gone down the investment route!

    "Retrospectively, I was wrong."
"Prospectively, I will be wrong again."

    I see it.

Always feel a bit sad when you see an old thread bumped and you see old accounts that just faded away. Not banned, or deleted or any forum drama. Just.....stopped coming round.

Yep. Angel_Treats... last seen 8 years ago.

I remember when anyone with a userid of over 5000 was considered a bandwagon-jumping n00b, and when we had a meet up to watch a private screening of Nausicaš Of The Valley Of The Wind, about 30 people turned up, that was around 50% of the forum regulars.

She's doing good, she's got a hilarious little kid and runs a cake business.

ed: No wait, she's going some fitness thing now. I suppose that sort of swing from one end of things to the other was inevitable.
