Start one then. I'm happy to post my opinions as I try them.

The thread started off with genuine concerns I think, but since its revival is definitely more about people being a bit more light-hearted about their booze consumption.

I mean, we could be all teeth gnashy / pearl clutchy about it, but I'm not convinced it would help anyone.

Tbh I think the fact it drifted onto different alcohol free options and not "top 10 liquors and the correct, vast quantities to drink them in" is good enough

On the subject of, the two I've tried tonight are...

Ambar 0.0%: Fine, probably equivalent to the Jupiler / Heineken. 3/5

St Peter's Without Gold: In the sink. I guess I could have drunk it if you'd forced me to. 1/5

I switched to mostly non-alcoholic beer in 2019 when drinking at home. I now have one night where I have alcohol a week. Took me ages to find a good one but Big Drop Pale Ale is great, by far the best I’ve tried. I found all the mainstream ones undrinkable. Means I still have that ‘occasion’ drink each evening, because I also found everything else boring to drink. Lucky Saint is pretty good for lager as well.

I subscribe to big drop now and they drop a case every month.

Also not quite the same thing. But someone was saying it’s hard to find good non-surgery drinks. I found ‘L’mon’ is good. Has that sugary drink feeling but is pretty decent in terms of not too bad for sugar.

I have a few Big Drops here, but they're all 0.5% so I'll try them in February.

My understanding was 0.5% was non-alcoholic (maybe not religious ok though). I read around when I was switching and I think it’s impossible to actually get drunk on 0.5% and even Coke has some alcohol in it.

Checked my L’mon cans, it’s 75% water, 24% fruit concentrate and 1% other shit. 7g of sugar a can but no fat and 35cal. Solid replacement for coke.

I bought a soda stream in the sales. Lime and soda has pretty much kicked my Pepsi Max habit. Now in the process of weaning myself down to soda only. It's been a game changer.

Put bourbon in the soda steam. I’ve always wanted to know whether that would work

I don’t think they did whiskey, but watch Ashens and Barry Lewis doing “Will it Sodastream?” on YouTube for a giggle.

Having a Mikkeller Xtra Grapefruit. Is pretty good, retains some of that Mikkeller weirdness, just obviously no alcohol. 3.5 / 5.0

Edit - Tried a porter (Braxzz)... still a 100% record of undrinkable zero alcohol porters.

...followed by an utterly rank Doom Bar Zero. Why does all the darker stuff taste slightly of soy sauce?

And that’s four weeks down for me and my fellow Dry January pilgrims. Personally the cravings have gone down considerably and I’m feeling pretty positive about being healthier going forward. Of course I’m saying that after a week off work so we’ll see how I go after I come back to a packed inbox on Monday.

Heineken 0% shandies have seen me through the long boring evenings. God I’m basic.

I'm somewhat concerned that I'm going to hit it hard when I go back.

Still really disappointed that I don't feel better though (and have lost fuck all weight).

Having not drunk enough to lose control of my bladder whilst asleep, I consider my dry January nearly done. Poor old Liam Neeson though...

I have thankfully never done that. I have thrown up though, which is significantly more dangerous.

I'd agree with this, 4 weeks in and I don't feel much different and have lost fuck all weight too. I have to say, I did expect to feel a bit chirpier after a month and that the lessening in junk calories through drink would have had some type of impact. Maybe the fact it's winter and I'm not out exercising fully due to cold, rainy shite weather & lockdown is partly to blame there.

It's been quite interesting though. With AF drinks available in the house, I don't *need* to have a beer, yet as time goes on without it, I would *really* rather like to have one.

I do intend to try to self-regulate a bit more going forward after the end of january and certainly have a non-alcoholic beer as a spacer between full fat hopped & malted beverages at the weekend for now. I think with getting truly fed up of lockdown, I could easily see myself going the other way and will try to kick against that.

I’ve lost half a stone, which is nice, but not particularly noticeable.

The main thing I’ve noticed since removing alcohol is that I have a near constant tension headache, especially when I wake up in the mornings. It puts a bit of a downer on the whole trying to be healthy thing. I’ve been trying to get to the bottom of it, but it’s not dehydration or diet, and I don’t think it’s related to stress. It’s a bit of a worry.

I'm wondering if I'm actually less "healthy" as I've lost one of my few methods of relaxing.

I may be making excuses for myself (probably am) but I found a real blowout with mates every once in a while really cathartic and that release is something that has effected my mental health this last year of being stuck indoors etc. Drinking at home takes the edge off but hasn't had the same effect by a long way.

Mind you, a lot of your posts trigger my stress (Brexit, CoVid etc.) so lord only knows how much stress you are weighing on yourself with what you are posting and reading - that has also been a real game changer this past 12 months.

None of it really effects me as I can't do anything about it. It's all rather more academic vs the real issues I'm having with my body failing on me. :(

I’m quite similar to others in that I’ve had a headache almost the whole month of ‘dry’ January

Sleeping has been pretty tough with it being between 2am and 3am each night before I’ve eventually drifted off. Only the last few days has it improved

Lost no weight as far as I am aware but I don’t feel as bloated as usual

I’ve found my mind a lot more active than usual, random forgotten memories keep popping up which is very weird

I think I’m going to carry on into February and see what happens there

You need to weigh yourself pretty regularly and note the general trend, rather than relying on the odd reading.

Not saying you've done this necessarily, but if you weighed yourself just twice 30 days apart you could easily have lost several pounds of body fat despite the scales saying the same thing. Water weight, having a full stomach (food and drink), clothing and just needing a massive shit and a piss can all make a huge difference.

You should weigh yourself first thing in the morning after using the toilet so they say, but even that can still be weird. The trend is 90% of the important information.

If you're in a calorie deficit you are going to lose weight, period. If you're really not losing weight then you have either replaced the calories with something else or you were consuming so many surplus calories you have actually "only" stopped gaining weight (which is still excellent, prevention is better than cure!)

Maybe work out how many calories you are now saving per week? I'm sure just seeing the number would be quite encouraging.

EDIT: Oh yeah user psychotext is that gym bro :) this is exclusively for Vortex then I guess

Not sure who you're talking to on that one.

If it's me, I calorie count so I've got a pretty good idea of my intake, and I've been weighing myself first thing in the morning (in addition to a number of other metrics) for about seven years.

I would suspect that my main issue is that my metabolism / NEAT has crashed due to the lack of quality sleep, because my intake would be definitely low enough to do the job normally (~1,900kcal not adjusted for exercise).

Bizarrely, during the last year of lockdown and more drinking that normal, I've lost loads of weight and now need to put it back on.

Maybe that's just cabin fever taking it's toll, no idea

Must admit am feeling a bit frustrated for the final 2 days.

Not got much in food wise, and the beer is in the fridge. Now would be an ideal time to crack open a couple of bottles.

I thought last weekend would be the worst, but this is more tempting.

Next year maybe dry february, only 28 days there.
