    I dunno, but...

we've had Blair and now Brown in power since Scotland got their own parliament, and I think it could be a cunning Scottish plan to get their own back on us after all these years - send two 'crack' politicians down here to thoroughly bugger up our economy and global standing, and woot!, it's whiskey golf and scotch pancakes all round ;)

Isn't stuff that needs to be done to 'save' the economy also the stuff that involves losing votes because people care more about having more money now than being better off in the future? So no matter who you vote for you're going to be putting up with the same shit.

This is pretty much the problem with leadership in democracies. It's all about keeping popularity and sometimes this is incompatible with things that actually need doing.

We end up with weak government because of this but then weak governments don't tend to be very good at things like carrying out genocides so I guess it balances out in the pro/con department.

He's doing everything possible given the overall state of govt finances - which is of course precisely fuck all and hoping for the best.

In all honesty the government isn't really to blame for the current debacle, however they pretty much deserve everything they are going to get simply because they claimed credit for an "economic miracle" that rested solely on a bunch of highly dubious risk assessments on what, in the cold light of day, was basically a pyramid scheme.

I suppose though it all comes down to how you want to structure your economy. If you don't have a solid manufacturing base then you need to rely on the quick bucks financial institutions can make.

Just to annoy the original poster, who's propensity to apparently ask innocent questions with an open mind is highly questionable. This is therefore all Thatchers fault.

Just watching the news. Some big company is one of the first of many that has decided moved from England to Ireland because of tax reasons. 28% to 10%. C-ar-azy.

Seriously, what makes you think the Tories could do any better? "Let's give them a chance?"

What are their plans to fix the economy?
What are Cameron's plans to achieve anything, come to think about it? Apart from doing "webcameron" publicity videos, and faking being green? He's the shallowest, least principled, and most self-serving politician since Tony Blair, and I will be damned before I let another smile, wave, and say anything to anyone Tony Blair clone run this country.

I'll be voting for the ugly unlikeable Scottish bloke, not "time for a change, oh doesn't he have a nice smile, time for a change, he will fix things with his nice hair, time for a change" oily smug posh Tory boy git Cameron

Tax cuts for the rich and war with the Unions, that's bound to fix this country. There's already been too much of that under Labour, are you seriously trying to tell me the Tories plan to tax more and invest in infrastructure and public-service pay deals?

    Yeah, it's saddening.
At least the Libs have some ideas and some of them seem genuinely interested in doing good. On the other hand, they do seem to manage to have different and competing ideologies within the same party depending on what seat they're going for, which they can do safe in the knowledge they'll never get into power.

I think quite a few people would vote for the libs if they thought they could actually win. There's a good few people sick of Labour and terrified of letting the Tories back in - considering they sold off all the nationalised industries last time, I figure they'll be harvesting us all for our organs by their second term.

The local lib dem council really fucked us over recently - Sold off part of the town's heritage to turn into a massive housing complex "with a few token shops, for the people y'understand"

Then whacked the council tax up by 2% after previously promising there wouldn't be a rise because of the money made from the development.

    Twisted sons of whores.

bollocks, innit. it's like having to choose the lesser of two evils.

    /world needs a superhero

Agreed but in the absence of super P.M what a crap attitude.

How do we know that is would be choosing the lesser of two evils? Yes D.C is a bit of swarmy sod but he is imo a lot more likeable than TB and GB.

Yes they could f*ck it up but then what's the alternative? The term lesser of two evils is an easy one to throw about without justification and in this case we have no idea how the tories would do. All politicians are t*ssers really I just want a fair t*sser.

Shall we just let the power hungry scottish bloke carry on?

i don't disagree. call me a pariah or chalk it down to voter apathy. give me an effective opposition party that inspires me to believe in anything other than abject cynicism and i'm there.

    Fair shout.

How odd, this is exactly what's just happened in the Nottingham NHS Trust. I wish I was clever and high paid enough to come up with the plan "to save money, pay people less".

This 10% tax rate situation is the most monumental fuck-up. What makes it so bad is that Brown actually believes that people will buy his "oh, but pensioners are getting extra winter fuel payments and families are getting more in tax credits to offset the change" line.

If you are single and earning less than £18k a year, Brown has taken much-needed money out of your pocket. Not once have I seen him or a minister actually admit that the people most in need of extra cash are losing out.

To add to this, the economy looks screwed - again, down to Brown saying one thing while underneath everything's gone to pot because of his ridiculous borrowing.

Much as I dislike the man with a passion I am not sure it is his fault that the economy is heading for a downturn. What I do blame him for however is that we enter a difficult period in pretty poor shape to quote someone who I cannot remember he failed to fix the roof when the sun was shining.

What this country needs right now is for as much as pressure as possible to be removed from the taxpayer not just individuals but companies too but I am assuming that he is unable to do this as he has spunked all the money elsewhere and we have none left. So when we need a break what we get instead is more tax, dearer petrol, dearer food and rising utility bills. Nice Work!

What exactly is he supposed to have "spunked the money" on?

Does Britain now have a gigantic set of alloy wheels with chrome spinners, and massive speakers?
Was it that subscription he took out for everyone in the country for all those collectible magazines, build the bismark in 300 issues and all that?
All that Ratnersesque jewelry he bought for Britain on the Shopping Channel?

Damn him and his profligate ways!

And how is he supposed to be taking the pressure off individuals and companie- oh wait, it's Tory Code for tax cuts. Sorry, stupid of me.

Better than our libdem(on) bunch have done. They've sold off most of the council property portfolio over the years, appointed 3 strategic directors who's first job is to find £250,000 of annual savings to cover their salaries*, and put the council tax up as a result.

    * they have it sussed though- a round of job regradings is occurring (my wife is being "regraded" to a level on 4/5ths of what shes on now), which has lead Unison to point out that the lowest office based job in the council actually pays less than stacking shelves at Sainsbury.

Think that happened to my mum recently. She tried for a while to show them she is doing a job that higher paid people do but they weren't interested so she quit and found a better job. News down the grape vine is they have hired an intern to replace her who obviously get paid peanuts and are clueless so the others have to help them making their job harder, nice saving for their stupidly high salaries. Twats.

In my experience of people I have actually met the only people who agree with the labour ethos on tax are either too poor for it to cost them anything or too rich to give a shit.
