    Red Light Somethingorothers - 2/10
    The Zutons - 9/10

Excellent FREE iTunes supplied gig at the ever pretty Koko, marred by the general lax nature of the support band, who only appeared to be playing the same song over and over again coupled with a solid, if unspectacular, cover of Heroes. Which had the same bass riff rifled into it their other songs had.

The Zutons, however, in the four years since I last saw them when they first started out, have matured into a sassy, solid, hit-laden rock and roll band. Sax player Abi has certainly grown up since I last saw her... ok, she's as thin as a rake but her legs are pretty mesmerising. The drummer fellow is a lucky fellow. Excellent inter-song liverpudlian banter, great songs made better over time, it's weird they've gone from pop curiousity to a reliably charming, effortless group. Noice.

    Lykke Li - 9/10
    Guillemots - 9/10

Lykke Li is like Annie Lennox and Kate Bush being channeled through a hyperactive, cute blonde woman with a Swedish accent. And is awesome. Never heard her before until tonight, free itunes fest again (I'm lucky, I guess!), and I've ordered the album. Astounding performance for someone so young.

Guillemots I had written off as being a bit emo, kind of went along out of curiosity as I rate Made Up Lovesong #42 and heard their new album took some cues from their death metal guitar/bassist DJ Lord Magreb. Was actually blown away by their talent and wealth of memorable tunes. Worth noting went with a friend who knew neither, and came away wanting Lykke Li's album and dead impressed with Guillemots. Great evening.

    Oxegen!

    10/10

VERY front row for Rage Against The Machine! My back is in bits after it!

    Lovebox Weekender -

Lykke Li - 9/10 for Lykke, 8/10 for the show because simply she's wonderful, but the ambience of the outdoors arena and sound was just poorer than at koko earlier in the week. Songs still awesome and stuck in my head still.

The Human League - 7/10. Generally, the stuff I didn't know I found rather... well, empty. But the old faves were awesome.

Groove Armada - 6/10. Great fireworks... but aside from a couple of oldies, where are the choons, and why is everything rockier than their earlier shows? Don't get me wrong... they're still brilliant, just compared to when I saw them five years ago or so... they've lost a bit of their magic.

Manu Chao - 10/10. Love his music and have listened to it since 1999. Now I've seen him, I'm a happy man. It's brilliant that he changes his songs in the live set to different melodies and so on, just keeps it fresh. Danced like a loon - legendary.

I need a new gig soon. Not been to one since Dream Theater last year. Supposedly going to one in Camden next month not sure who the bands are though some metal/hardcore shite.

    :(
  • Deleted user 20 July 2008 00:23:04
Still, you went to Dream Theater last year whilst I went to Maximo Park on the same night and gave my ticket away to a girlfriend of mine... doh.

Tomera are playing Thursday at the Camden Underworld. Go. I will be. My flatmate's a great technical bassist and the band is very prog jazz metal.

This is true, but the gig was shite, not DT's fault venue was not very good for them imo, they needed something smaller.

I am sure they will be back next year :D

Radiohead in Berlin 2 weeks ago - 9/10

Perfect sound, rain, good performance, nice audience, awesome visuals, just generally very good. Not 10/10 because that is reserved for the Radiohead concert in Berlin on September 11th 2001. Very epic.

Biffy Clyro at the Roadmender (Northampton), great gig, let down by lack of alcohol and feeling too tall/old for the crowd, as well as a short set and little from their previous three albums. 8/10

    UB40 at Newmarket last night.

The first half was good but after 40 minutes or so, it just sounded all too samey and the drums were drowning out the other instruments half the time. After Red, Red Wine was played, I reckon 50% of the crowd left there and then.

    6/10

    Luchagors

    and

    Zombina & The Skeletones

    Music - 9/10

    Crowd - 3/10

The music was great from both bands. Always love seeing Zombina and they played some new songs, all great. Hadn't seen the Luchagors before, but they were great. Quite cheesy yank punk rock but without being irritating.

Only annoying thing was the crowd generally not getting into the whole thing, despite cheering like crazy and clapping and whatnot. I don't know, maybe I'm old fashioned, but I like to see people (especially the front row) getting into it. They all said they loved it afterwards, so maybe I'm just mental.

Radiohead at Old Trafford Cricket Club back in June. 9/10 - Very good as always, though not a perfect 10 as they're better suited to dark venues, and also not *quite* as impressive as the Blackpool Winter Gardens gig I saw them at a couple of years ago.

Wasn't the most recent, but I saw Pink Floyd play at the Live8 concert a few years ago!

    10/10

Nothing else I've ever seen comes close to that performance, and they only played 3 songs.

TV On The Radio - 8/10

Great energy, good crowd, and the band all looked like they were having a great time. Played most of Dear Science, but no Halfway Home. :(

Also, no Playhouses or Blues From Down Here. Not the best setlist they could've come up with, but a great show nonetheless.

Bloody hell. Carter USM. Flashback. I remember drinking with them in the New Cross Venue - must have been a bit before the Love album came out.

Or, strictly speaking, I don't remember drinking with them in the New Cross Venue. I don't remember leaving the New Cross Venue. I don't remember much of the journey home. But I remember kicking myself when I found out I'd been drinking with Carter USM and couldn't remember any of it.

Last gig was the Deadstring Brothers upstairs at the Sheepwalk in Leytonstone. Great Exile-era Stonesy country blues. 8/10. Next gig is Nick Cave on the 29th. That will be 10/10. Gig after that is Nick Cave on the 30th. That will be 10/10 too. I love Nick Cave.

hehe, seen Carter quite a few times. They were like the default introductory Indie band when I was 15/16.

Less Than Jake - Astoria 12/11/08

It was my first "proper gig" and I loved every second of it.

    Imperial Leisure - 8/10 (support)
    Beat Union - 6/10 (support)
    Pepper - 9/10 (support)

Less Than Jake - 9/10 (Would have been a 10 apart from some chavvy woman kept standing in front of me!)

    Yup, me too!

Every now and then they do a little reunion nostalgia gig and I’ve been desperate to go to one, but the tickets are hard to get. I booked these back in February or something.

Now to dig out that long-sleeved ’30 something’ top…

    Ditto.

Though only at Glastonbury and a couple of gigs at the Camden Falcon in Londinium...

(grotty place that, is it still there / a gig?)
