    Elbow - NIA Birmingham

An excellent performance from, as far as I am concerned, the best current UK band, Guy Carvey has to be the funniest and nicest front man I have ever seen and musically they could not be faulted.

Only criticism I would have is that the gig could have gone on for another hour as there were loads of older tracks not played (seen them three times and they still haven't done Powder Blue!) but the new stuff sounded fantastic and of course most tracks from The Seldom Seen Kid went down a storm and all topped off with a run through the crowd from Guy (Mrs Fletche has a crush on him so was gutted he didn't run near where we were)

Wish they had of done more off the first two albums but even taking that into consideration 10/10

Just because he's been to one gig doesn't make him a stalker ecosse! Beasty is far from GiantBackrub levels of obsession at the moment.

That only really holds true if you exclude his most recent post in the Katy Perry thread. :p

I heard he also likes Genesis and Phil Collins, and once had sex with a prositute whilst listening to Sussudio. The likeness is uncanny.

I'm going to see Patrick Wolf tonight, and I've seen him once before. Am I going to get called a stalker on here when I get home?

    Katy Perry @ Manchester Apollo - 10/10

Just got back. Fucking AWESOME gig. AWESOME!!!

Why? Let's start with her in general. Got a really got a good banter with the crowd. Went on about how she's into The Smiths & The Stone Roses (got mighty cheers for that) and Oasis (no doubt from her husband). Then started on the football but she was really funny. But the best bit was she picked out people at random from the crowd to dance with her when she was doing a cover of I Want To Dance With Somebody.

Anyhow, at the end one of the girls who was on stage and quite clearly terrified went up to her with a camera and asked if they could have their photograph taken together. So she got the camera, reached out and took a photo of them both. Of course she wasn't going to say no. But she checked it, realised it wasn't that good and took another one. I mean, come on. I can't imagine many (if any) other people doing that. One of the teen guys on stage looked like he copped a feel though, lucky bastard :-)

The show itself was as the Manchester Apollo and the venue seemed to small for it. She's playing the MEN in November and I'll be going to that. Just lots going on and it's superbly done. There's a story going on (which I won't bother explaining) throughout the entire show, between the songs. It's something a bit different from the norm.

She also does have some fucking superb pop songs that are fantastic live. As for the costume changes, there were fucking loads. However, when she's performing Hot And Cold she changes costume on stage about 8 times in just a few seconds. It's pretty amazing when you see it.

I think she's well fit too. Some of the costumes just left me drooling. She got really sexy on stage when she was performing Peacock.

Some of her songs from her new album contain swearing which were intact. There were quite a lot of young kids in the crowd. There's one bit in this story which is playing on the screen where she goes 'What the fuck?' which got a great laugh but you could see some parents with a smile on their faces but obviously groaning.

Anyhow, I've gone on for far too long. I'll pop the photos up sometime soon. I highly entertaining, funny and the best 'show' gig I've seen.

    Ah, now it makes sense.

Patrick wolf at oran mor, Glasgow. 8/10
Would have enjoyed a full version if hard times, but apart from that it was all good. Support came from rowdy superstar, who was different.

Yeah, I am that shallow but look nothing like Christian Bale. I do like her stuff though.

I've got the Dum Dum Girls next week but I'm looking forward to the dot-to-dot festival in Manchester. Loads of acts on all day and into the night. The full line up hasn't been announced yet but it's looking good so far.

    Big Audio Dynamite

It was great getting to see b.a.d. I never thought I'd get the chance. They were a little ropey though. They totally fluffed their opening song - medicine show due to problems with some inappropriate samples going off and the set list was missing 3-4 of my favourites (isn't that always the way).

They ended strongly I suppose with 'the bottom line' and e=mc2 . Their second encore was 'rush'.

The song of the night was 'the battle of all saints road'

Mick Jones and Don Letts are national treasures though.

The Dum Dum Girls @ The Deaf Institute Manchester - 7/10

Decent gig. Did their cover of The Smiths song "There's a Light That Never Goes Out" right at the end. Went down very well.

Johnny Foreigner, Nice 'n' Sleazy, Glasgow - 10 out of fucking 10.

Started with an amazing performance of Johnny Foreigner vs You, which was sung without microphones, after which the band played pretty much all fast songs. Other highlights included a never seen before full live version of Salt, Peppa and Spindarella, during which I fell over a monitor on to the stage from moshing, the sing-a-long to Kelly's parts during Every Cloakroom Ever, and the Conga line at the end.

Probably the best gig I've ever been to.

    Battles, ICA, London - 8/10

I'll cut to the chase: they didn't play anything from Mirrored, let alone anything from their two EPs. Friend I was with was a bit miffed at this. And I got the impression a lot of people there wanted to hear Atlas at the very least. It was all about the new album and the new line-up, since they're a 3 piece now. So on to the review - they were pretty good. Drum sound was amazing, Ian Williams' was OK but Dave Konopka's bass and guitar were really muddy and ill-defined. New material was more of a distillation of what the 3 do best. John Stanier was playing the shit out of his drums with a mixture of hip-hop and rock beats, just stunning, the other guys do some textures. Worked pretty well for me! They got around the no-vocals thing by having some of their vocalists (including Gary Numan) projected up onto screens and vid-synching.
Saw John Stanier walking about down The Mall and in the bar beforehand, so I guessed he's a pretty chilled out guy.

Aloe Blacc & The Grand Scheme - 9/10 Birmingham HMV Institute

Great gig but poor gig venue (I loved the place when it was the old Digbeth Institute and even the Sanctuary), £4 for a pint of watered down beer and shitty televisions on during the gig. However the gig was fantastic, Aloe is a genuine star and his band were fantastic. He also put on a genuine show and got the crowd eating out of his hands. A pity he didn't do anything of his first album (A very minor complaint), but the Jazz version of Billie Jean and the soul medley more than made up for it.

    ^^ Sounds ace.

Dan Sartain, Two Tears & The Computers - 8/10 Bristol Thekla

Small crowd, tiny venue, plenty of chatting with the artists, partying after. The Computers are ace, really looking forward to their record out next month. Two Tears rocked, and Dan was... well, Dan. Rock n roll made a bad day awesome.

    :)

Disturbed here in Brisbane, Australia - 9/10.

Just a great show. Great atmosphere, place was packed and the drum solo before Down with the Sickness was incredible.

    Charlatans, Sheffield Academy - 6/10.

Old tunes were great, new tunes were just a dirge of sound, no real structure to them it seemed, also, the encore was rubbish. Disappointing.

Queens Of The Stone Age, The Roundhouse, London: 9/10

Great gig, in a pretty cool, unique, intimate venue. Played their debut album for the first hour, then a bunch of their newer, better known stuff, with a few audience requests, for a further hour.

    QOTSA, Olympia Dublin.

Main set was flawless, best show ever. Encore mostly shit. 10/10 for the main event, 4/10 for the encore. 8/10 overall.

I saw Dan at last years dot-to-dot festival and got 3 of his albums since. Had no idea who he was when we went to see him and he was just fucking ace!

    Suede-Performing Suede 6/10

Bitter-sweet experience this gig. Suede were one of the first bands I was massively into. Now, 17 years after I first saw them it's just not the same anymore. Hard to say whether it's me or them who are past their sell by date, I suspect a bit of both. On the surface it was probably a lot like the gigs I remember, but somehow the energy just didn't feel there.

Maybe it's just time to accept I'm not young anymore.

Explosions in the Sky - 9/10

Would have got 10/10 if it wasn't for the drunk guy next to me trying to smooch onto a girl with her shit air drums. Don't ruin my gig when your drumming along to songs you don't know.

Roger Waters - The Wall, Manchester

Awesome stuff. They just don't make them like this anymore. Don't like the man, but he sure knew how to put songs together. The wall display was extremely well crafted and thought provoking.

Suede - Performing Dog Man Star 9/10

What a difference a day makes and a stark reminder that a gig is what you make it. After last night when I ended up standing at the back with friends who weren't massively into the band, tonight was like the old days, at the front and going mental with good friends. Great songs and great to come out with a ruined voice, the ring of permanently damaged hearing and aching pogoing muscles. Loved it.

Dot to Dot Festival - Manchester

Below are the ratings for the bands I saw, in the order in which i saw them. Most of the bands I saw, I'd never heard of before.

    Kill Van Kulls - 10/10
Great Manchester band that I think will go really far. In just really like their sound.

    Letters To Fiesta - 6.5/10
After the brilliance of KVK these were something a bit different. Again from Manchester and sounding not unlike The Cranberries.

    Golden Glow - 6/10
I've seen these before as a support act. Singer seemed really nervous. It showed. They're not bad though.

    Veto - 3.5/10
From Denmark. A bit shit really.

    Frontiers - 8.5/10
Great band. A lot more like it after the Veto rubbish before.

    Foreign Office - 9/10
Excellent band with a Talking Heads sound. Which is no bad thing at all.

    Braids - 7.5/10
At first I thought "what is this eeky ookky wookie dookie hippy shite?". But they are pretty damn good once the guitars and her incredible voice kicked in.

    Lines - 6.5/10
A bit like a speeded up Cast. Alright. Met band before & they were top.

    Trophy Wife - 7.5/10
    Great drummer. Decent band.

By this point I was starting to get a bit jaded. Most of the bands we'd seen were of the "3 guys on guitars and one on drums variety". No bad thing in itself but things were about to get much better...

    Cults - 10/10
Outstanding band from New York. Bound to be huge! Guys look like hippies but the lead singer has got an amazing voice and she was quite fit too. Retro music is kind of the best way to describe them.

    Romance - 10/10
Fuck yeah!!!! Rock 'n' fucking roll. Best of the day so far. Lead singer like Billy Idol. The lady in on the guitar - wow!! Music balls out brilliance.
Linky to a performance of theirs

    Joy Formidable - 9.5/10
Formidable. Looses 0.5 for being rammed like you would not believe. Had to get out. As there's no set number of tickets there were waaay to many people in.

    Royal Republic
Another balls out rock 'n' roll band. As funny as they were brilliant! Joint best band with Romance today. And I'd never heard of either of them before.
Linky to a performance of theirs

    Morning Parade - 9/10
Great way to finish. Great band from Essex.

I went home after that lot. I was fucked. Day was a 10/10
