It irks me so much :-D It's probably testament to the film that I wanted to see Porco's situation resolved. Ah well. The pilot's heaven scene was absolutely magical. |

Registered 13 years agoIt's my favourite Ghibli film. I will always love Totoro as my first magic gateway, but the craft involved in Porco Rosso is marvellous. The script is charming and original, and the backgrounds are just stunning. -

Registered 19 years agoWhen I want to throw a Ghibli on to watch, Porco Rosso is usually the choice. However it's been a while since I've watched Nausicca or Spirited Away. -

Grave of the Fireflies is on tonight on Film 4. A heavy viewing experience, but recommended. -

It's a print! Really nice quality and only cost a bit over 6 quid. I bought two for some reason.

Registered 13 years agoAh, a print is even better, it won't lose its glory. Where did it come from? Might have to get one for my daughter's room when I have some spare cash. -

Registered 13 years ago@localnotail I found it via a vinyl/music forum I lurk on. The girl who did the prints put a thread up about them. -

Registered 10 years agoFinally got round to Porco Rosso last night and can't believe it hasn't received more recognition. The art direction/music alone made it a 9/10. -
From twitter: "Princess Mononoke and The Cat Returns were released on Blu-ray in Japan last month. We are working with our int'l distributors on those."
Yay!
Also they said yesterday that they've completed the English dub of The Wind Rises so however you feel about dubs that means it's one step closer to release. -

Registered 17 years agoWatching Mononoke over last year's Film 4 Ghibli season I spotted that the English version was significantly cut (with respect to violence) compared to the Japanese version; both of which were shown. -
Oh, I hope it's not the actual version but just the broadcast that's cut. Was the English version in the day and the Japanese on later? -

BBFC claims English language version was passed uncut. I think we can blame Film 4 for that then. -

Registered 14 years agoThe BFI Southbank in London are having a Ghibli season throughout April. Starting with Nausicaa on the 2nd and finishing with the new film, The Wind Rises on the 23rd.
Haven't seen a few of those on the big screen, though I'm not sure I could ball my eyes out at Grave of the Fireflies in front of everyone.

In other news, thanks to Bertie above I finally got to see From Up On Poppy Hill the other day. Thoroughly charming film. It's the first of my Ghibli straight romances, and the only other non-fantasy Ghibli I've seen is Grave of the Fireflies. But it's refreshing to have a more grown-up film after Ponyo. -
