@ibenam Nope, new customer. Nobody was offering fibre in my area until yesterday when the Virgin guy knocked on the door and said they're wiring up our neighbourhood.

I bought in a cul-de-sac and the school thing means I won't be moving for at least ten years. I didn't fully appreciate that it wouldn't be worth them running cable into a street with ten houses but where only three of them have occupants under 60.
    I miss cable :(

It'll go up to something like £37pm after the first year at which point I'll downgrade to 50mb or threaten to leave and negotiate a discount.

That would be smart on their part because I'll probably have no alternative fibre provider to leave for.

Fuck Virgin Media. Last month we upgraded the broadband to 100mb and knocked the TV off as we never use it. I've been keeping an eye on the speed over the last week and it's been as high (low) as 30 and as low as 2.

A few weeks ago I got a call from them asking (pleading) if we could keep the Tivo box and standard channel package at no extra cost. Before the conversation I made him read back to me what we were getting: 100mb broadband, free evening and weekend calls and the standard tv package for 32.99p/m.

The woman I spoke to last night said that we're on 50mb broadband with the rest for 36.99. With my blood starting to boil I asked them to cancel it altogether, having wasted half an hour and missed putting my lad to bed. After getting through to customer relations the guy tells me the sales person had put us back on 50 and got commission for making us keep the TV package with less channels than we had before, for extra cost. He's also "got previous" for fobbing off customers so he get's commission for it.

I had wondered with Sky releasing Sky Q that Virgin were to follow with their own alternative, making it easier for them with customers keeping redundant boxes. But no, it was just thanks to a snivelling little cockwiesel. After hearing that I lodged a formal complaint and dropped the 'gross misconduct' spiel, saying that if I lied frequently to my customers, I'd be given the sack. Called again to make sure it's been followed up. The complaint has gone to his manager and Robbie the fucknugget will receive the feedback from last nights call.

    Wankers.

Poor Robbie... He was just trying to save up enough money to buy new shoes for the orphans and now he's out of a job :(

My fibre optic (70mb, I think) has been shit the last week. Hovering about 10mbps and having trouble buffering YouTube. May be time to give them a ring, although call centres make me want to die.

Mine has been shit in the evenings. I'm supposed to be on 152 meg, and it's always fine off-peak, but in the evening it can drop to anywhere between about 8meg and 35 meg.

Hopefully that'll improve when I move, but we'll see. Having not chosen a location, I can't even be sure fibre broadband is an option.

Where do you all live to be having such bad speeds from virgin, I have used them for years and never really had any issues apart from a couple of outages.

I have 200mb and get that constant when wired on ethernet.. wifi obviously gets a little slower dure to hardware but still hits 150+ on the laptop and my phone.

I do live in an area that isnt densely populated so im guessing that could be the issue.

Over-utilisation is a problem for Virgin in busy areas - they sell a good looking product to too many people and it goes a bit shit when they all start using it.

Leafy outer Glasgow suburb. So I expect the faster rates will be popular. Was struggling to get to 3mb one night last week. I keep meaning to install something that will automatically test for me over time.

Having said that, I was staying at a friend's out on Skye last week. They are with BT, and get 0.5mbs if they are lucky.

I've had a utilisation fault ref for 18 months now. Waiting to hear for a new update from their forum bods atm. Usually get a £12.50 credit each month.

I'd much rather pay full price for the 150 I'm supposed to get, rather than the 10-20 I manage after 8.
  • Deleted user 24 February 2016 13:52:41
I like that they call it a fault.

Serious peak time drop offs for about 3 weeks now.

Used to get a solid 100meg anytime bit recently it's been all over the place.

Seriously annoying when I ring them to be told the same bullshit. Will be looking for a way out of this contract soon as I'm simply not getting what I'm paying for.

Kind of sounds like you've already found your way out of the contract... It's just a case of arguing that point with their cancellations team

Last time I rang they told me they are upgrading me to 150meg for free.

That's nice but maybe they could make sure I get 100meg first. Idiots.

A relative of mine had to pay a disconnection fee when they moved to a new house not served by VM. When they were out of contract. They probably should have argued more but didn't really understand how.

Sadly, the story about someone being mis-sold a package isn't new in telecoms. It's probably the next PPI...

    @N9th I tried that yesterday.

Guy wouldn't budge. My main complaint was the upload speed and how it's throttled and not advertised as being extremely limiting.

I'm on a 50mb/s line but in evenings get 1 or 2. Spoke to them where they said a fault has meant that all traffic through the area is being passed through our infrastructure! This morning tested and got the full 50mb! Infuriating!

I've no complaints about the services I receive from VM. On the 70mb broadband service and receive that pretty much consistently without issue.

However, I'm recently out of contract and I'd be keen to get an idea of what you guys get, and for how much so I have a ballpark figure for trying to negotiate a better deal? Would be much appreciated.

I know I'm now over paying, but I currently have:
    - 70mb broadband (I actually get 70mb)
    - landline (free evenings and weekends)
    - TV in 2 rooms (1 TiVo and 1 V HD box). Very basic TV package (no movies or sports) but I think it's one slightly up from the absolute entry level. I get Sky1 for example, though only the SD version of it)

Paying approx £62 per month now.

    Any tips appreciated.

You won't get better than that anywhere else. The whole point of virgin is there fibre. And if you get those speeds I'd be ecstatic!

@Pierre2k we have the same boxes as you, TV XL which is all channels without movies and sport and 200mb broadband for 72, was 85 before I called them.

@Pierre2k Call up, say you're regretfully leaving, money is tight etc, reject the offer they'll give you there and then, then play the waiting game. They'll call you every day.

I kept 'missing' their calls for a couple of weeks. We're on full TV including 1Tb TiVo, Sky movies sport and HD, 100MB with the latest Superhub (the one that actually works!), evenings and weekend calls for £68pm on a 6 month offer, then £92pm.
  • Deleted user 24 February 2016 22:53:56
    @Pierre2k

That's over the odds for me. Look up their new customer deals and ignore the extra box cost as they will freebie that normally.

I pay 70 for Big Kahuna with an extra box. Had much better in the past, including half price deals. Trick is to cost a discounted Sky deal and call retentions to say you are switching. It's a lot of luck with who you speak to but dont deal with the normal customer services.
