Anybody have a cat and a cat allergy? I've read that some cats are "hypoallergenic" in so much as they produce less of the enzyme in their saliva that people are allergic to, can anyone attest to this? |
EG's best moggie. KNEEL BEFORE MOG. My house smells of cat piss.

Registered 16 years ago@gammonbanter When I was a teen and we first got a cat (or rather, when one of the local strays decided she was moving in, whether we liked it or not), my mum was horribly allergic to her at first. But after 6 months, that allergy had vanished completely. However, other cats would still set her off sneezing. I'm guessing you can attune to individual cats over time. -

Registered 11 years agoMy ex-wife had a cat allergy when she first moved in with me. I have 4 cats. She maybe had a couple of weeks of issues and taking allergy tablets then everything just cleared up suddenly. Every now and again she would have a bad day and have to take an anti allergy tablets but these were maybe once every couple of months. -

Registered 12 years agoA local cat charity post popped up on Facebook asking for someone to adopt a perfectly healthy fourteen-year-old moggy that had been passed on to them after its owners took it to the vets to be put to sleep, just because they didn't want it anymore. What the fuck is wrong with people? It should be a lot harder to get pets IMO. -

Registered 12 years agoWhen I say "local" I mean in Lincoln, which is now very, very far away from being local to me. But yes it is hairy. -

I miss my parents' cats, but NZ cats are good cats. We've got a ten-year-old rescue cat called Shadow.

The only thing about having cats in NZ is that they eat the endangered native birdlife, so you shouldn't really have them. I would feel bad getting a kitten here. -

There's a few vocal politicians and groups that talk about it, but it's far from universal. -

Registered 18 years agoAnyone know how much premiums are likely to increase if you claim on pet insurance? Stupid animal got himself in another fight and needed a wound stapled shut... £170. Excess is £95 though, so not sure if worth bothering for the rest... -

Registered 15 years agoOur cat must have found a birds nest, as she just brought in a series of not quite dead baby birds. It’s really bummed me out. -

Registered 18 years agoYeah, I've had a couple of those. First time, one of them managed to bring in 5 chicks that clearly should have been out of the egg. 2nd time, two birds half dead but still able to make a racket. That was more traumatising. -

Registered 10 years agoYeah it’s not fun when they bring shit in and it’s a race against time.
The other morning one of ours brought a bird in, we got it out her mouth and the bloody thing stated flying all over the place into cupboards and shit. It was a proper cover head run for the back door moment, and it finally flew out and that set another cat off and over the fence after it. I think it got away but no idea If it was damaged, it sure wasn’t flying all that gracefully.
I’d completely forgotten about it until now thanks to the above posts, was half asleep at the time lol. -

Registered 17 years agoOur cat is a too slow and clumsy to hunt anything. Our house sits next to 2 vacant plots that are overgrown with weeds and wildflowers. Every cat from half a mile around comes wandering through our garden because it's slightly higher than the jungle next door and they can just sit there and keep watch for possible prey.
I'm glad ours never catches anything more than flies, moths and spiders. Never anything yucky to clean up or get out of the house. -

Registered 17 years agoMine are both indoor cats so I don't have to worry about birds and mice, though they're so bad with months and the occasional spider that I don't think I'd need to be concerned anyway. -

Registered 18 years agoOne of mine has take to dirty protests at his collar of shame (due to come off tomorrow) by pissing in random places, even though there's a perfectly useable litter tray that he's used also. Once on a bag, once on the beanbag and this morning in my son's lego tray. Little shit. -

Registered 6 years agoMy cat is ill again. She's gone from never being ill to being very ill three times in the last year. 15 going on 16 years old too which is a worry.
As before incredibly lethargic, seeks isolation, quiet and shelter, reduced responsiveness to attention, reduced appetite, and new this time trembling hindquarters.
Last time was identified as possible poisoning due to eating something she shouldn't, time before complications following "probable cold or flu like symptoms". This time we can't identify anything that's changed about her before today or anything new that's been brought into the house.
Having a five month old baby in the house hasn't helped her nerves or us paying her enough attention recently.
Sat up watching her paranoid about what might happen in the night now.
Mrs Maybe is likely to be first up and I'd hate for her to be the one to walk in should anything tragic happen. -
It's not impossible that it's been the same thing all three times as no previous cause was ever definitive and the vets* successfully treated the symptoms.
*two difference branches of the same big local practice
