Great, weren't they? How cool is it that they've reformed and are playing a few London gigs? Even better that I got tickets. And how much does it suck when you totally run out of money? Anyone want two tickets for the Roundhouse gig on the 22nd? Face value - £25ea. Don't really want to sell, but this month, £50 is much more useful than me to a MBV gig, good though it will be... |

Registered 15 years agoHmph. They've always been one of those bands that are supposed to be great but I just never understood the appeal. Much better shoegaze-type bands out there IMO.
I've only heard Loveless though, so maybe that's where I'm going wrong. -

Definitely. Saw them a couple of times the first time around (Loveless and the Rollercoaster tour) and they were absolutely superb.
If you're into the shoegazing, elredeyegrande, then Isn't Anything might be worth a punt. Brilliant album. Slightly less abstract than Loveless. You couldn't ever describe it as 'poppy', but compared to Loveless it's getting there. Basically, it's the album that invented shoegazing - created the whole template.
(Whereas Loveless was the album that took shoegazing to its logical extreme, making everything that came after it pretty much redundant.) -
I feel so lame for having no idea what you mean by 'shoegazing' -

Registered 14 years agoWithout a doubt one of the greatest bands ever and totally underrated, but that's probably a good thing.
Shoegaze is a genre of music that started in the 80's with bands like The Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and The Banshees etc... and it was later a big influence on The Stone Roses, Ride, Sonic Youth and more recently Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Sigur Ros etc.
Basically lots of guitar effects and drones looped over each other into rhythms and with lots of distortion and noise thrown in for good measure. Vocals and beats often get pushed right down in the mix as well so the end result is a very woozy effect.
Definitely not to everyone's taste, but some of the best bands ever have dabbled in shoegaze at some point in time.

Oh and I'll be seeing MBV later this month as well, can't wait. Loveless is in my opinion one of the most stunning albums ever recorded. -

Registered 15 years agoLoveless is a fantastic album, wonder what the record company thought when they first heard the 'unigue' production style...
Haven't heard any of their other stuff. -
Pre-ordered the remastered albums earlier. .gif)
Shame they're not out for a month. -

Unless of course they are saving the material for a new album... -

They have said every 5 years or so they are doing another album.
But seeing as they are touring again, it's a lot more likely this time around.
I just hope they pull a Portishead on us and return with a blinding album. -

Registered 20 years agoThe new album is supposed to be the one they started recording in 1996. The setlist from the warm up gig says no new material though. -

To be honest, I'm kind of glad they are not trying out new material live. -

I miss this gig through not knowing about it and then discover I can't get to the Monster Magnet gig on the 24th due to work.

Just got back from this - Roundhouse 22/06. Amazing. Free earplugs all round. Didn't use them, until 20 minute white noise outro. Went and stood in the outside bar
- fucking ridiculous. Funny though - especially for the utterly reverent look on the face of the bloke in the green stripy who came up to us beforehand and asked if we were fans of the band (er, no, mate, think they're shite), before lecturing us on how they're the most important musical act blah blah. Hope your ears bled, you twat. -
Fuck sake Shields! WRITE THE LINER NOTES! The reissues were supposed to be out last week! Now Amazon are saying September.
