    Jacobs website is teasing us

I don't know why I care, I love my D80, but Rutty is hoping that the D300 price will drop after the D700 launch.

Ooh it's like waiting for a new Mac product to be announced, only far less likely that I'll buy one straight off the bat!

Yes, I mean I realise it's a lot less than a D3, but 2.800,- EUR is still not exactly in impulse buying range. :)

What's this, some frickin' fancy pants Euro way of writing 2,800 Euros?

If it was 2,800 Euros, I'd buy one tomorrow. That's about 2 quid. :p

The Euro lot swap the commas and full stops.

2.800,00 is how they write 2,800.00

Having worked with money in Gran Canaria, I still catch myself doing it sometimes.

I am blind, too. The article says 2.600,-, not 2.800,-. Sorry.

Well there's another reason we shouldn't join the Euro, PAH!

    ;)

Anyway, yeah, that's what, £2,055? Sheesh... All I want is the same glorious noise performance as the D3 on a D200 or equivalent, for under a thousand notes, and I'll be awesomely happy. How bloody long am I going to have to wait for that, then?

Doesn't the D300 go someway towards that goal? And as the lass says, I'm hoping that this will knock the price right down.

Dunno, not as far as I know. D3 sensor is the holy grail for noise at the moment.

I think the D300 has all the new processing engines and shit that are in the D3 but without the awesome full frame sensor, so it's much better, but obviously not a D3.
  • Deleted user 30 June 2008 22:23:35
Almost 100% positive it doesn't do noise like the D3 does.

No, of course not :) But I read it's a bigger step up from the D200 than the 200 was from the 100 if you see what I mean.

I dunno, I didn't read anything that made me want to part with my D200. But sling that noise-reducing sensor in there and I'll be seriously tempted. As in, fuckitI'mgettingone.

    D700 on Nikon website

Looks great. Haven't they slightly shot themselves in the foot by not doing the D3X first though? Who's going to buy a D3 now?

D300 noise handling is almost as good as D3
News to me, and indeed music to my ears. Any links to test shots at stupid ISOs that demonstrate this? Ideally D200, D300, D3?
  • Deleted user 1 July 2008 10:58:28
Thing is it won’t be long now before the D300 sensor turns up in a cheaper body, ie the D90, so why not wait for that?
  • Deleted user 1 July 2008 11:18:13
The D200 has a lot of very important (to me, anyway) layout differences to the 'consumer' bodies of the Dxx range, such as ISO, WB, QUAL etc on their own buttons, plus memory banks etc. If a Dxx body had those Dxxx features I might consider it, but I doubt it. I'd rather wait for a D300 to get a lot cheaper, because I feel the same about the D200 as bauhaus does.

bauhaus, you bought a D3, though, right? I'd love one but it's only the noise factor I want to improve. There's nothing else I really need from the body that the D200 doesn't currently do very well.
  • Deleted user 1 July 2008 11:25:34
Hmm, the D300 seems to lose a lot of the detail in it's noise reduction. I'd say the sensor in the D3 is considerably better than the D300, even though noise reduction alone is way better in the D300 than the D200.

    Dammit.
  • Deleted user 1 July 2008 11:26:33
Actually the D80 has all of those on dedicated buttons.

The D80 is more or less the D200 is a non aluminium body. I strongly suspect the D90 will be the equivalent to the D300.

Of course the other consideration about getting a D3/D700 is to really get the benefit you’ll need an FX lens, which is also a bit of an outlay of cash. Anyone read anything about some new FX lenses to go with the release of the D700?
  • Deleted user 1 July 2008 11:34:56
I’ve been looking at getting a D40 for my other half so that we can both have cameras when we go out, but if the D300 starts dropping significantly I might get one and pass on my D80 to her.

How cheap do you reckon second hand D300s will be?
  • Deleted user 1 July 2008 11:42:21
Cheapest you can get a new D300 body for is just over £900. Thing is the D700 is going to be about £1500, so it’s a totally different price bracket, and there may not be as many cut price D300s as we might think.

As I was peering through the dense fug of Nikon love present in this thread I suddenly thought how strange it was that WOPR hadn't posted a pro-Canon / anti-Nikon comment...

Then I realised that he hasn't posted for ages & all his posts have, in fact, vanished - which would explain why the photo gallery thread went a bit strange the other week. Has he been G.I.'d?
