Hello I am thinking of upgrading my camera I currently have Fuji S3500, which is coming up to 4 years old I think.

Anyway that has 4mp, and not knowing a lot about the technicalities of a camera I was thinking of shifting up to 10mp which seems to be pretty the norm now.

Anyway this camera caught my eye, Camera

Can anyone confirm whether the specs are any good? Or better still has anyone used it and can state whether it is any good.

    thanks

You won't regret it in the slightest. It's a fantastic camera. I have a D70, several other forum users have Nikons in that range. Buying from John Lewis is a great idea, their prices are fair and the service is excellent.

All in all, top choice. Go for it.

Check the photography group for many threads with info on Nikon bodies and lenses.

edit - incidentally, megapixels really have very little to do with it. My D70 has 6mp which is more than enough. The important thing is the quality of the optics and the quality of the sensor. In both cases, Nikon is first class (you'd also be fine with one of the other DSLR brands).

    D40 or D80.

D60 is a pointless model in between just to fill a price point. As Otto says, megapixels are a red herring, and this is basically the only difference between the D40 and D60 (and a few hundred quid).

Well the MP was tempting because I do like to print in A4, and I assumed the more MP meant that they would be sharper when blown up.

Is 6mp is sufficient then maybe D40 would be better, the D80 bit too much.

Before I do take the plunge, what would you guys suggest I do look out for?

Does the D40 have the vibration sensor?
  • Deleted user 29 June 2008 23:49:48
In terms of megapixels, you can compare an image from my 10 (or maybe even 12, not sure) Sony compact Cybershot next to a shot of the exact same scene from my aging D70 (6MP) and the difference in quality is like night and day. And not in the Sony's favour. MP does indeed mean that it prints the dots closer together the more MP you have, but if the sensor that captured those pixels was a tiny piece of shit, it makes not much difference... ;)

When he says vibration sensor, just so you're clear, he means that some of the new sensors vibrate lightly to shake off bits of dust etc - he doesn't mean a vibration reduction sensor, which some expensive lenses have, and most digital compacts have. :)

The only problem with the D40/D60, which may or may not be an issue for you, is that they will only autofocus with a lens with a built in AF motor, which rules out a lot of older lenses and newer ones too like (I think) the lovely Nikkor 50mm f1.8. They will still work in manual focus, of course.

If you wanted to go down the Nikon road and the lack of AF was an issue, I would say pay a bit extra and get a D80. I got one recently and it's fantastic. I paid £450 body only from Wilkinson Cameras. Or alternatively you could look for a used D50 or D70, both 6MP but capable of producing very high quality photos.

May get the D80 I am waiting to see how much I get tomorrow. Cost of living rise backdated to last August.

The D60 on the Nikon website seemed to have some sort of vibration thing, that meant when your hand naturally shakes it balances it out. Couldn't see whether the D40 had the same.

I think you mean the kit they do with a VR lens. The tech is in the lens rather than the body, you'd have to get at least a D300 to get an anti-dust sensor.

On that note, Dixons in market leading deal shocker here. And if you add the code AW10 when checking out you'll get another tenner off :)

I did mean a VR lens that makes more sense now.

    Apologies for confusing everyone.

Thanks for your help. I will let you know tomorrow what I picked up.

I bought a D40 early May, and today bought a D80 (stayed my hand from an impulse D300 purchase). The D40 is fantastic, cheapish and takes cracking pics, but the lack of quickly accessible functions (it's mostly all through software, rather than on the body) is frustrating if you want to learn about cameras.
  • Deleted user 30 June 2008 00:47:47
What sort of functions are you referring to?

That was part of the reason I upgraded from the D50 to the D80 too. Things like metering mode that I wanted to be able to change didn't have buttons on the body. I also wanted the extra dial for aperture instead of using the shutter dial and having to hold down a button. And the DOF preview button, not that I've even used that yet.

    I got the D80.

    I feel so guilty.

Don't. You did the right thing. I wanted to tell you to do this.

It's a good choice Prawnking. You'll have fun!

On a side note, I picked up a tripod in a charity shop for 6 quid. About a fraction of a second after my Gorillapod turned up.

I bought a D50... Great camera, but it was pulled almost as fast as it was launched.

    I'd buy a D80 if replacing it.
  • Deleted user 30 June 2008 16:39:41
I like the camera just the cost. I know it is right though.

If you're looking to get extra lenses, I'd highly recommend kea-photo. I recently bought a Tamron 90mm macro from them, and even after spending an extra tenner on a Hoya filter, and another tenner on next-day FedEx delivery, I still saved about £60 on UK prices.
  • Deleted user 30 June 2008 19:49:16
I will bear that in mind, for the moment I will get used to what I got and try get my head around the camera itself. My other one is just point and click, this is a whole new world.

If anyone is fancying a D60 then you can currently get it with £60 cashback bringing the price down to £349.99. Comes with a free camera bag too, which is nice ;-)
  • Deleted user 10 July 2008 17:25:43
Id say push the boat a bit more and go for the D80. There are many good deals to be had.

I think the D40, D60 and D80 all have pretty cash back offers at the moment wherever you get them from. As said above, I don’t really get the D60. It seems to just be a big D40 (which is a bad thing).

It's not necessarily a bad thing, if you have big hands for example :-)
  • Deleted user 10 July 2008 17:33:38
Heh, D40 isn't that small. It's still way bigger than any compact.
  • Deleted user 10 July 2008 17:47:05
It is extremely small for an SLR granted. I saw one with a 300mm lens on it and it looked ridiculous :)

Still, I wouldn’t call it small. It can just about compete with bridge cameras for size, but you couldn’t put it in your pocket like a compact.
