Registered 18 years agoNow this one here does look pretty special. Perhaps someone else can shed some information on it? but to me it looks like it would be very nice to move around. -

I have this tripod (190XPROB) and it's worth pointing out that the portrait functionality is brilliant and completely built into the tripod, whatever head you're using.
...The tripod I have is this one here...You can do portrait very easily without having to loosen the camera plate...
Just extend the tripod height extension fully, switch to horizontal orientation (rather than vertical), lock off and - hey presto - you're set for portrait shooting. No need to even remove the camera from the tripod. -

Registered 17 years agoI just bought a D60 and can't wait for it to turn me into an awesome photographer!
If anyone is interested in one of these thay are doing a great deal instore at Jessops at the moment - £399 for the camera + vr kit lens + 55-200mm sigma lens + 4gb card. The lens is worth £100 so its a bit of a bargain I think. I bought it anyway, and am now very excited about my first SLR. Roll on hometime. -

That does indeed sound like a bargain. Have fun

Registered 16 years agoThat's what I paid for me D40 in January form the same place ;_; The Sigma lens makes you wish you had a focus motor on the body though, it's pretty slow and I barely used it. -

ecosse, how is the D40? I'm a fellow DSLR n00b (although I have got some SLR experience) so am interested to hear what a fellow DSLR virgin thinks of it. -
ECOSSE! I am ][ close to ordering this of amazon, should I? Does the lack of AF get in the way at all? I had a Sony a100 for a while but hated the size of it (bloody beast of a thing) and this looks nice and small. -
Ah ok, where did you order it as I am looking at this, so does the lens that comes with it have AF built in? All the reviews I have seen seem to automatically disregard the kit lens and start talking about the limitations in what other lens you can buy. It is a bit annoying really. Are you happy with it? Taking some good pics? I'm away down to Edinburgh next week and am away to the zoo so want a camera for that. -

Which lack of AF?
It has a 3-point AF sensor.
Do you mean the lack of it with older lenses?
I bought it with the VR Nikon AF18-55mm kit lens and don't own any old lenses so it would depend on that...
Think the age of the lens is irrelevent, it's about the tech. -
Look for reviews of the kit lens, then, and not the camera.

Registered 15 years agomowgli, that's the exact one I've been looking at too - it's £50 cheaper on amazon than anywhere else and the price has dropped from £240 a couple of days ago.
Trouble is, I'm slightly worried about it getting something that expensive and delicate delivered by post, but I'm not sure whether I want to pay an extra £50 to get it in a shop ...
ecosse - any chance of you sticking some pics you've taken with the D40 on this thread? Would be great to see what the results are like

I was on Amazon looking for a book and saw that in the wee box at the top right and all of a sudden I have two hundred pounds and am in desperate need of a new camera. Gah!
Looking forward to seeing the pics ecosse. Hoping they are terrible of course so I'm put of just a bit. -

Registered 15 years agoWell, it could be one of those things that they say is a special price, but is actually a permanent reduction. Still, if you're interested in getting it, might as well get it asap just to be sure

Registered 17 years agoI got the D40 from Amazon (July - for that price) and it's pretty great even for a dslr noob. I'm only really starting to understand the technical side of things but the auto mode would help out most if they were stuck.
I can pop a shitly composed pic or two up later but I can't see that helping sway anyone

What do you mean by "it's great even for a DSLR noob"?
