I'm a real camera noob (it was for the gf really - so I know very little about aperture, focal distance, etc ) but I banged out a few pretty nice pics using the basic settings. My own camera is a finepix one like this and it's a good half-way house if you're not 100% behind a slr. imo. which counts for little. |

Just ordered the D40, will arrive on Friday. If I'm feeling brave, I might post my results on the main photography thread ... -

Registered 14 years agoAnyone seen any good deals on the D40 or D60? -
Just found someone selling a 2ndhand D60 with 2 lenses, boxed for £130. Bargaintastic for someone that wants a cheap DSLR for upcoming 1st baby pics? -
Heya binks, like I said I would check to see which lenses are being sold with it. Generally speaking it almost always makes sense to buy second hand as long as the gear is in good condition. Lenses hold their value, bodies don't, so you can pick up real bargains if you go second hand whereas a new budget DSLR will probably come with a shit lens. -
What otto said. Honestly I'd consider getting a 2nd hand D70 instead. It'll be just as cheap (if not cheaper as it's a lot older) and is a far better camera.
The D60 really limits you in that it has no internal autofocus, so you actually end up spending far more on lenses than you would with a slightly better camera. -
Thanks guys, really good advice. Hadn't noticed that there was no AF in the D60 body for example. I do think I want 8mp as minimum though. -

Registered 20 years agoNote that pretty much all new nikon lenses (new designs that is - they still manufacture some old ones) contain internal AF motors, so they can be used with any current Nikon DSLR. Not having an internal motor mainly limits you by not being able to use old-model prime lenses - old zooms are generally not worth having afaict. The main lens people always point you at, the 100 quid 50mm f1.8 is an 8 year old design based on a 25 year old design, and won't focus on a D60, but Nikon are gradually releasing internally focusing versions of their prime lenses like the 35mm f1.8 AF-S. -

That's a misleading point really, the bit in brackets is key. The vast majority of lenses in the Nikon range brand new in shops have no internal AF. -

Registered 13 years agoOkay, some of you photography enthusiasts appear to be online so i'll use this opportunity to ask questions in this thread. Please direct me towards the correct thread if this is inappropriate.
Right, I have a budget of 130 and I need a camera. My last camera was a Canon Powershot A710 IS. It was easy to use, and it had manual settings (a must for me as I need to mess around).
I'm looking for a similar camera, I know Fujifilm produce a number of excellent "super-zooms" at this price but I don't like the menu systems on their cameras. I'm indifferent to the age of the camera and quite indifferent to MPs.
Any recommendations? -
