Yup, forced to move away from Virgin after a house move, chose BT for the sport, really wish I hadn't, absolutely awful company.

Anyone using BT TV here? They're looking like the likely place to jump to at the moment.
Yep. TV is ok apart from the shockingly bad box and remote. Broadband is nothing spectacular, I still can't get past the moderate nat settings though with 2 xboxs on the network.
But I still managed to half my bill when I left sky, and I shall do the same once my bt contract is up.

So I either go to BT and get shite TV box, not great internet and awful customer services, or go to Sky and get fisted up the dick hole for my money with equally bad service, or stay with Virgin who have my balls in a vice regarding upload speeds.

Or, get everything individually and pay over the odds rather than flitting between "Offer" deals from the big 3.

    Brillo.

So, on the non-cunt list is Xilo, any others? I'm not keen on their offered speeds nor pricing.

    Xilo
    Fast
    AAISP

The best you can you get at the moment and if you want a hassle free service with no traffic management then these are the guys for you.

If you pay cheap for broadband then you're sadly gonna have a shit service.

Fast has up limits and usage limits. Pass.
AAISP are only offering ADSL in my area. Pass.

Just a shame it is a bit of a cunts market out there really.

You looking at FFTC on Fast as they offer no limits for both?

Have a look on ISP review as they have plenty of small providers that are much better than the big 3. Unfortunately you are gonna have to pay a premium for decent broadband.

This thread is making my upcoming decision a difficult one. I'm moving house soon and ditching Sky as it's the biggest pile of shite I've ever experienced. I WAS going to switch to Virgin, but now I'm not so sure!

Once you get around the Superhub, and unless you have usage levels that will regularly see you throttled, or you really really need Sky Atlantic, Virgin are absolutely fine. I've been using them for over 10 years across 3 different properties around Bristol, and not had any major issues.

Remember people will always vent about bad experiences with a service, but rarely comment when things are good. Plus going with cable means you don't have to install a council house dish \o/

The BT Homehub 5 FWIW is a decent, up-to-date piece of kit, certainly compared to the shite Sky offer anyway.

I've been happy as you like with their service thus far. It's just the network management that's thrown me off. Cannot see the need for such a restrictive upload speed.

Well to counter with my own anecdote, I've been with them since Telewest and my area of Edinburgh has gone tits up since being supercharged. I'm getting around 8mb most evenings on a 150 line since last September with unreliable ping times.

No issues with their customer service, who have given me two amounts of compensation, however given FTTC is now at 'Coming Soon', if they don't fix it soon I'm off.

Look at their support forums, there seem to be pockets everywhere that have been struggling since the last lot of increases. I actually miss peak time traffic management - it seemed to work.

Had a quick look at these, was surprised to see each have data cap still, even on the top packages. 100GB might seem a lot of butter within Netflix, that's gone quickly

Remember though that outside of peak time (after 8pm weekdays with weekends totally free) you can download as much as you like.

I have the 75gb one and never go over each month even though i'm constantly using p2p, Netflix, gaming etc. I prefer this can the crappy traffic management and terrible pings.

A lot of my Netflix consumption is the kids. Although tbf, much is at the weekend, so you might be right, may never be an issue.

Can't fault Sky tbh, tenner for unlimited fibre and no throttling (that I've noticed). The router is crap and it's locked down but still. YMMV applies though, obviously.

Thanks a lot for the info though, I will get on and see what can be done.

    Cheers

I love the Virgin package i get, seriously with no issues.

XL TV (no sports or Movies)
Internet - PS3 rates it as 17MBs download 2.3 upload
Telephone i have but never use.

    £52 a month

Was with SKY for three years previous and they were awful, poor service and all about money.

I am getting rid of Virgin though and going for freesat as the tele we watch is on there as will be free after set up cost. I am wary of losing the amazing internet we currently have.

My Virgin has been down for two days now. The little data symbol on the Superhub is white, not blue.

To their credit they're sending an engineer tomorrow. I've reset it, switched it on off and so on. No joy.

So Virgin Media putting the prices up again... Only signed up for the telly, because we have no aerial for freeview. Basic package was 14 quid a month on a promotion, went up to £16.65 last February (in the promotional period, which was irritating), and going up by another £2.99 this February coming. Time to get that aerial fitted...

Yup. £3.99 for me too. Price was something like 45 quid a month when I first signed up. Now before the 'I'm going to leave' discounts it's approaching 70. Fuck that, I'm off.

Hopefully they call me back with an offer I can't refuse.

I used to be with Virgin Media before we moved to our new house where they've not had the road dug up and cabled up. I would have stayed with them had that been the case.

I settled with BT over Sky, and it's been a good switch. The Youview box is very intuitive and allows you to watch all the catch up services very easily. It also allows you to use Netflix which is a hit in this house.

I do use a SkyGo code on the Xbox to watch the occasional footy or Rugby League so I don't feel I'm missing out on anything.

Don't be scared to tell them you're leaving. I handed in our notice a while back and they called me every day, and I'm now on £60pm for everything (incl. movies and sports) for 6 months, rising to £90.

Sigh. Just got their self install pack for my new place. Called the activation number, connected it all up, solid white light on the hub, connected to wireless... no connection to the internet.

Yay. Time to phone the customer support muppets. =/

IIRC it does take a little while to sort itself out after the initial install. I wouldn't panic too much.
  • Deleted user 29 January 2016 10:37:41
It took about 4 hours for my new hub to activate. Phoning "the muppets" didn't speed it up.

In the documentation it said half hour, so I gave it an hour. Then the muppet on the phone just said half hour more...

...going to be one of those days.

I got told once by a Virgin engineer that devices such as the xbox can only handle a limited amount of bandwidth and he showed me a glossy card with pictures n that. I thought then that was using his anus as a mouth but am I wrong?

A Virgin engineer once told me that using an xBox or Playstation physically degraded the wires into the house, which explained why my internet wasn't working.

I was more impressed than angry.
