    Virgin are pump.
They have frequent downtime, the speeds and internet reliance fluctate massivley, and I keep disconnecting every 20 minutes or so.
That could be a problem with the router, I suppose, but I'm still playing Virgin. >:(

No problems with my service, save for the throttling, which is rubbish. I recently threatened to leave them and they upgraded my 2Mb service to 10Mb for £2 less a month. Free wireless router thrown in too.

Nope, just a crappy joke about stuff I barely understand. I don't even know what it means, bar the fact that it's a bad thing :)

    @Nipples

People here have mentioned that before. You realise Virgin IS an ISP ? It still does dial-up FFS, as well as ADSL.

Do Virgin Media throttle justin.tv? It's the only website I get real trouble with after, say, 4pm. It is majorly pissing me off.

Never heard of them throttling websites. You sure you just haven't gone over the daily limit after 4pm. It's only a shoddy 700MB or something after 4pm to 10pm on the 10mb speed.
  • Deleted user 13 October 2008 19:49:10
Well it's the only thing I can think of. Most nights jtv is unusable for me but YouTube works fine and download speeds seem fine as well.

    me no understandy :(

  • Deleted user 13 October 2008 19:53:20
    What.
  • Deleted user 28 October 2008 15:10:07
Fnnr. They've had major problems the past two days, but have now cut off the internet completely whilst they investigate a local networking fault. I'm using my phone to get -some- work done (well, browsing the internet, anyway) whilst they fart-arse about, but it's not quick enough to log into work and properly do anything.

TV seems to be a bit fucked as well. On Demand isn't working, so I'm stuck with fucking daytime TV. Ugh.

My Virgin internet has slowed to a crawl tonight. Trying to download heroes and its barely breakin 1kbps. Took me about 5 minutes just to get to this forum page. :(

    Hello there,

We’ve noticed recently that you’ve been using your Virgin Media Broadband connection to upload and download a lot more than we’d expect.

While we’re pleased that you’re enjoying using our broadband service, when someone downloads an unusually large amount of information over a long period of time, it can slow down the internet speed for other users. So, to make sure our service is fair for everybody, we’ll need to moderate the speeds of your service as mentioned in our Acceptable Use Policy.

If the amount that you’ve been downloading is affecting other Virgin Media users during peak times, we normally only reduce your speeds to 512Kbps for the rest of the day, and this is usually enough to help us make sure that everyone can enjoy a speedy broadband connection. But, if your use is higher than normal during the peak times of the week, and doesn’t seem to be getting any less even with the reduction to 512Kbps, we’ll eventually reduce your broadband speed during peak times to 80Kbps – and that’s for the rest of the week.

    How this affects you
Because we have seen prolonged high usage on your account, we’ll be moderating the internet use during peak times for the rest of this week (until Sunday night).
This means that from 4pm to midnight from Monday to Friday, and 10am to midnight on Saturday and Sunday your broadband service will be 80Kbps (that’s just faster than a dial-up connection). During these times you might want to stagger your use, so that you’re not doing everything in one go. Outside of these times, you’ll be able to use your service as normal, with speeds of up to 8Mb. If you’d like to find out a bit more about why we do this just click here.

Keeping track of what you’re using
To avoid this happening again, you can cut down on the amount you’re downloading at peak times and, after Sunday, we’ll put things on your account back to normal. To help keep track on this, there are lots of handy tools available on the internet which can tell you how much you’re downloading over a specific period.
If the next time we look at our users we notice that you’re still downloading more than we’d expect, we’ll just apply the usage restrictions again and let you know what’s happening.

Want to know more about our Acceptable Use Policy? Just click here to read the whole thing.

    The Virgin Media team

Just recieved that email. Im on 80 Kbps till Monday. :\

All Ive downloaded that I can think of is series 1 of the wire and a few xbox demos.

Do all ISPs do this? Im moving flat in a couple weeks, think I may need to find a new ISP.

    O_o

What the bloody point of having a fast connection if you're not allowed to down/upload as much as you want? I'd never accept something like that and I haven't heard of a single Swedish ISP that throttles DSL or cable bandwidth even if you torrent shit 24/7.

    You brits are getting f*cked.
  • Deleted user 29 October 2008 00:18:42
It's because they decide to give us speeds that the infrastructure can't actually handle, simply because other companies are doing the same.

Virgin are currently trialling their 50Mb package. God only knows what's going to happen when that kicks in to the public.

Presumably if you download a text file you're immediately dumped back to 28.8Kbps or something.

Hmm... I download about 10GB every day, plus net use and gaming time. I do do it all late at night/early in the morning though, easing off when their limiters are put into place. 2.4GB from 10am-3pm and 1.2GB from 4pm-9pm is fair enough IMO. At other times I download as much as I can and I've never had any complaints from them.

Actually, most of the stuff I download is... no, forget it. I'm actually downloading 10 copies of Fallout 3 simulataneously as we speak and am going to burn 100 copies for all my homies and bitches. Suck it, world!

I think Virgin won't lose any sleep if you moved ISP. If you're going to download illegal content at least have the decency to do it outside of peak hours. I personally think Virgin (and the other ISP's) are right to clamp down on this.
