hehe S.L.A.G. I love the concept of mass battles. The idea of being in the last five or ten of your "army" would be fairly exhilarating. Then the last online multiplayer I enjoyed was tribes. So I am a little out if touch. |

Registered 14 years agoIf you watch the gamespot interview the guy at suckerpunch said the game has been in development since 2006,its out end of 2009 and the dev team stops working once a week for massive internal studio warfare.
The 256 multiplayer is already up and running.
Sony just wanted to tease. -
If you see anywhere near 256 players in a game 2 weeks after launch, colour me shocked. Unless it's a massive hit like Halo 2+3 and Counter-Strike, it's going to be epic fail. -

Registered 20 years agoCan you imagine the amount of TKing in a game like this with 250 players. -
planetside handled 300+ battles fine while a small squad could make a big difference to a battle and tking was mainly by accident due to the insanity of the battles

Server-based game, that (Delta Ops or summat like that?) - you can do bundles of players on a server-based game; see MMOs.
You do know the Xbox (last gen) had a 50 player FPS?
Anyhoo, check this for a potential method of upto 900 player peer-to-peer FPS gameplay on present connection speeds. Looks rather fancy. -

Don't quite a few PS3 games have dedicated server? Maybe that's what the 'Only possible on PS3' comment was about.

I was reading that earlier, could be rather impressive if it works as well as it suggests. -

This will also certainly be server based too, and with a big enough battlefield and squad based objectives that mean you're rarely actually near more than a dozen other players so everything will be manageable.
I don't doubt that they can pull it off - they wouldn't give it the spot of curtain closer if they weren't confident and would have closed on GOW3 instead. I just don't think it will be that compelling. Even in CGI form it just looked like another generic shooter. -

Planetside was awesome but undernourished.
I trust zipper on this and the concept trailer showed off exactly what they want to do - I truly hope they do just that.
I'll be there for this one.
Edit: Why is everyones reaction to this going on about the 256
player battles?! Surely this is made of win?!
Have there really been that many massive online FPS warfare games that didnt work?! No - So why is everyone so negative, I'd understand if it was something that was tried and failed, but this is barely tried. And where it has been tried, like Planetside, it was fucking KICK ASS. -
So what type of game is this? -

Dedicated servers are not a feature exclusive to PS3, just depends on the title and publisher in question as to whether they're necessary or not. -

No, the "only possible on the PS3" thing was marketing rubbish.
Don't be so gullible. -

Nah, not exclusive to the PS3, they have them on the PC too! -

@SeesThroughAll
In no way did I think it was only possible because of the PS3's hardware, just maybe Sony's online setup. Same way someone might say LBP is only possible on PS3 because of the reliance on user-created content -

Linky. -
The way they're revealing news at this year's E3 is bizarre. It's like they deliberately held back information from the press conferences so they could release it later. Which seems like a great way of making sure people miss the information. -

You get them on 360 as well. -
That trailer was very brown.
